The Blood Coast

This event was a collaboration between the Royal Spies and the Britannian Royal Guard.

Spy Mission 67, July 6, 2010 - A Private Little War
Lord Grey asked the Spies to investigate a report of fires at sea between the cities of Jhelom and Trinsic. He said the report had come to him through Commander Keel of the Royal Guard from a small settlement near the Shrine of Honor. Suspecting pirate activity, many spies donned seafaring disguises.

Robert McFarland, a Royal Surveyor, was found in the ruins of what had been the settlement. Pirates had attacked the fledgling community, killing and pillaging with abandon. McFarland seemed confounded at the horrific event; having been told that a ‘merchant ship’ captained by Maggie Keel (aka Maggie the Red) protected the area.

The Spies headed to Buccaneer’s Den to try to learn who was behind the attack. Sam the Swift sent them to Calico the chef of the Pirate's Plunder who knew nearly everyone on the island and provided several leads. Calico mentioned Jason the smithy, who was skilled at making a fine cutlass, Squinty the provisioner, Tim the beggar, and Redcap the smuggler.

The convoluted investigation which followed uncovered a battle between Maggie the Red and a self-appointed Pirate King named Smith. The two pirates had been at a stalemate since neither of them had a steady supply supplies due to the Den’s residents claim of neutrality. However, a shipment of weapon destined for Smith’s fleet was discovered along with a map.

Letter, by The Pirate King

Sadie Rumswiller, under orders from Minister Grey, used the map to sail the Spies to Bald Island. There they found a pirate fort commanded by the Liar Queen, the ‘Pirate King’s’ wife. Ra’Dian Fl’Gith, in the guise Nobeard the Blue, presented her with the shipment of weapons. The Liar Queen tried to enlist the Spies in Smith’s battle against Maggie, however, it was a ruse. She knew that those before her were in fact the Royal Spies and attacked.

The battle was swift and the Queen lay defeated. A nearby crate held a message saying further instructions would be delivered the next day to a drop at the southern end of the isle…

Letter, by Pirate King

July 7, 2010
Hidden Spies watched as a pirate messenger ran up to the drop box and left a message from the Pirate King for the Liar Queen.

Orders, by Pirate King

Following the message, Jason the smith on Buccaneer’s Den was quickly questioned. He had been secretly supplying Maggie the Red with weapons and knew where she could be found. Jason also mentioned that Redcap had been caged somewhere in the tunnels under the city.

Sadie Rumswiller sailed many of the spies to the coordinates on the open ocean given by Jason. There they found Maggie the Red, who was in fact Commander Christine Keel’s erstwhile mother. Maggie had passed information through the Commander’s contacts to drag the Crown into her conflict with Smith. Maggie negotiated a trade of information for her freedom and told the spies that Smith’s men were about to lay siege to Trinsic.

The Spies rushed to Barrier Isle and successfully repelled the pirates. They eagerly awaited the next message drop…

July 8, 2010
The pirate sent to deliver the message attacked the Spies who openly stood around the box. With the pirate’s defeat the evening’s message was found.

Orders, by Pirate King

The Spies headed to the tunnels under Buccaneer’s Den in search of where Redcap was held captive. When the many jailers were defeated, Redcap was questioned about the information from the earlier letter. He said that the Pirate King had a strong box in the vault of the Trinsic Bank, and gave a combination of 30-15-45.

Finding Donald Stitches in Trinsic’s Keg and Anchor tavern was the Spies’ next task. He informed them that they had to find a book at the library in Jhelom and that the book required a cipher that could be found on a cutlass in Traveler’s Inn.

When the book was decrypted, Sadie sailed the Spies as close to 159o E 29o S as she could get. The reason the settlement by the Shrine of Honor had been attacked became clear, they had built near where Secutor’s men had buried his treasure. Speaking his name in the area caused a ghostly voice to speak, “Here I, Secutor the Cruel of the Blood Coast, buried my wealth! A curse on those who touch it!”

The last task was to leave a message for the Pirate King in a new drop box on Amoeba Isle. Ra’Dian Fl’gith reprised his Nobeard the Blue alias and left a note with coordinates to Secutor’s treasure. Several questioned the wisdom of leaving real information…

Guard Mission July 9, 2010
Commander Keel met the assembled Royal Guard and Royal Spies in Britain to prepare to end the Pirate King’s activities. The Commander seemed displeased that the Spies had struck a deal with her mother, Maggie the Red, but admitted that Smith was the greater threat.

They headed for the location of Secutor’s treasure and found that Smith’s men had already dug a hole which led to a cave. Within the cave, two massive ships lay entombed with many restless undead. When they had been dealt with, Commander Keel began speaking to a seemingly empty chair – where her mother sat hidden.

Maggie the Red revealed herself and said that Smith had already recovered Secutor’s Cutlass and that he had a storehouse and fleet hidden nearby. Commander Keel tried to arrest her mother, but Maggie disappeared through a secret exit and escaped.

The Guard and the Spies reasoned that Smith may be using the humorously named ‘booty cave,’ as his storehouse – they were correct. Their raid on the cave left many pirates dead and Smith on the run. They followed him out to sea where they found his fleet and more of his pirates. After capturing his flagship, they learned that the wily Pirate King managed to escape in a small skiff headed towards the northern isle of Jhelom.

Following Smith to the Isle, they found him cowering in the jungle. And there he met his end. Secutor’s cutlass was retrieved and the pirate war ended.
