Mirendel’s First Easter

April 24, 2011
Princess Mirendel, the baby platinum dragon living at Castle Britannia, celebrated her first Easter this year. Well wishers learned of the little dragon’s visit from the Easter Bunny and her fears of an old folk tale…

Happy Easter! The Easter Bunny visited Miewendly and brought Easter gifts! Yummy bonsai toy to eat and climb on! Miewendly likes pwetty eggs too. And jetty beans. Miewendly also get pwetty purple book from Kazola. Kazola read to Miewendly about bad Baba Yaga. Baba Yaga eats bunny rabbits! *opens eyes wide* Even Easter Bunnies! Miewendly banquished Baba Yaga! Banquished!

Miewendly banquished Baba Yaga to a turnip field. She not allowed to catch any bunnies ever. Baba Yaga has to stay in turnip field until she learns to eat turnips instead of bunny rabbits. *eats jelly beans and happily babbles the word 'banquished' to herself*

Baba Yaga, by folk tales

If you visited Kazola’s Treetop Keg & Winery just east of Yew in Felucca for a chat with Kazola you learned more about her recent time with Mirendel.

Happy Easter! *touches purple book* I've been lost in nostalgia...

This was one of my favorite books when I was a little girl. I got a copy for Mirendel and went over the other day to read it to her at the castle. Poor dear thought it was real and was horrified to hear that Baba Yaga eats bunny rabbits. You see, she was so looking forward to the Easter Bunny's visit. She resolved it for herself though, the way children do. *grins*

She "banquished" Baba Yaga to a turnip field! *laughs* And forbid her to catch any more bunnies. She’s a sweet baby. As she fell asleep, all curled up, her little talons were moving and she was mumbling "no more bunny stew for you! *smiles fondly*

Those who know Mirendel also know that she has access to the extremely powerful magicks of her race. However, the baby platinum neither understands these magicks nor has the power to properly control them. Kazola’s mention of the baby’s dream… What if she made the folk tale real?

A quick search of the handful of Britannian turnip fields borne out this fear. Just west of Britain, a hungry Baba Yaga was found standing in the field of Koressa and Megan. Handing her a turnip produced an interesting response:

*bares her iron teeth* You won't get into my house unless you climb in through the chimney!

Handing her a piece of meat, preferably from a rabbit, earned you access to her home.

*grins, her iron teeth gleaming in the sunlight* You may visit my home. Locate... Locate the mortar and pestle. Stand in the mortar and say "zvonok". Make yourself comfortable... Read my books on hunting rabbits, pesky horrible things that crunch so nicely. *sighs*

Based on the book that Kazola gave to Mirendel, Baba Yaga’s house could be found around the edge of the Bog of Desolation, the swamp northeast of Britain. Traveling to the swamp, a bizarre home could be seen towering above the fetid water. An oversized mortar and pestle lay mired in the muck just to the south of it. Climbing inside and uttering “Zvonok” whisked you into Baba’s parlor.

If you nosily poked through the knitting basket on the floor, a diary could be found.

Diary, by J.M.

It indicated that the witch was partially aware of the unreality of her existence, but had managed to rationalize the notion away. Since Mirendel had manifested her, Baba had scattered six special eggs around our world. Together, these eggs would spell out her true name, a potentially useful bit of information. A nearby bookcase held Baba’s Hunting Guides, potential hiding places for the eggs.

Hunting I: Cove, by Baba Yaga

Hunting II: Yew, by Baba Yaga

Hunting III: Skara Brae, by Baba Yaga

Hunting IV: Jhelom, by Baba Yaga

Hunting V: Delucia, by Baba Yaga

Hunting VI: Verity Isle, by Baba Yaga

Hunting VII: Best Spot, by Baba Yaga

In Cove, the first egg could be found resting on the deli case of the Farmer’s Market. A red ostard egg with “Ja” scratched into its shell.

In Yew, the second egg could be found resting on the soft dirt of the Empath Abbey vineyard. An orange ostard egg with “dw” scratched into its shell.

On mainland Skara Brae, the third egg could be found nestled amongst the watermelons at the southernmost farm. A yellow ostard egg with “iga” scratched into its shell.

On the northern Valorian Isle, the fourth egg could be found in the small shack in the eastern fenced field. A green ostard egg with “Ma” scratched into its shell.

In Delucia, the fifth egg could be found hidden in the forest in the northwestern corner of the city. A blue ostard egg with “rin” scratched into its shell.

On Verity Isle, the sixth egg could be found resting on the gears of the orrery at the Moonglow telescope. A purple ostard egg with “ovna” scratched into its shell.

At the "best" hunting spot in the Hedge Maze, one could find an agitated Easter Bunny. The bunny implored citizens for their aid.

We're rather anxious right now. We're scared Baba Yaga will break free of her turnip confinement. If only we knew her real name. We could walk right up to her and be safe. Hmm... her name... If you know an evil creature's true name, you can ward it off, keep it away. We're scared to deliver Easter eggs, and now there's quite a backlog.

With the letters scratched onto the ostard eggs, the name “Jadwiga Marinovna” could be divined. To make sure the correct name was given to the Easter Bunny, a quick return to Baba Yaga in the turnip field was in order. Saying her name provided positive results…

*Her eyes go wide. She smiles slightly and absentmindedly nibbles on a turnip.*

Her true name known, the Easter Bunny seemed overjoyed and rewarded you for your work.

Baba Yaga's real name! I will pass this on to my brothers and sisters. You've helped all Bunnykind! I wish to thank you. Go visit my friends, the flowers, at 124 28'N, 9 46'W. Tell the roses... Tell them it's Spring, then offer to sing to them. Beware though, even flowers can be dangerous.

The coordinates led to the small flower grove far northwest of the Shrine of Justice. Announcing to the grove that it was spring rewarded one with a delicate perfume of roses and wildflowers. If you began to sing, the flowers asked that you:

Sing a song of renewal for a blighted land! Renewal!

If you acceded to their request, you would be teleported far away to the Blighted Grove…a dangerous place indeed. However, for your troubles you were rewarded with an ancient oak bonsai tree.

The Noble Frog (Subquest)
Remembering that Baba Yaga let slip another way to enter her home through the chimney, returning there was your next step.

Ascending to the roof and tumbling down the floo was deceptively easy. Doing so dropped you into the home’s tidy kitchen. Looking around, it was easy to spot a rather intelligent looking frog floating in the sink. Unsurprisingly, the frog asked for help…

Greetings. I am a lady of noble blood, but imprisoned here as Baba Yaga's servant for 100 years. I have a plan to escape, if you'll help me. *rbbt* I need three items. First, please bring me a jug of cider. I can put that in Baba Yaga's food to dull her magic.

Giving the frog a jug of cider revealed the next item she required.

Thank you. *rbbt* Now please bring me a shuttle of thread.

Returning with thread, the last item she needed was learned.

Finally, I need something I can soak the thread in to make it strong. Then I can bind Baba to her chair and make her change me back. *rbbt* Please get dragon blood.

Once she had the dragon’s blood, she told you of a treasure…

Now I have a chance at freedom! To thank you, I'd like to tell you where to find a treasure. Beware though, *rbbt* it is a dangerous path, full of monsters and fire. Go to the Fire Dungeon and find the Stone Puzzle. It's in a room on the second floor. *rbbt* It's made of colorful stone.

To travel it safely, you must step on the tiles in a particular order. Your first three steps should be: yellow, purple, yellow. Beware! There is danger at the end of the Stone Puzzle! *rbbt*

Once you had found the correct room in the Fire Dungeon, navigated across the pastel teleporter puzzle, ran past a few daemons, then avoided a combustible floor, you could claim the treasure. A dragon statue would reward you with a large ornate dragon Easter egg.
