The Holly & The Ivy

December 2, 2010 (Felucca)
In medieval times, there were many songs about strife between holly trees and ivy plants. Holly symbolized men and ivy symbolized women. A song from that time that you may still hear at the holidays is “The Holly and The Ivy”, in which the holly carries the day:

The holly and the ivy

When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood

The holly bears the crown

A song in which the ivy wins, “Ivy, Chief of Trees”:

The most worthy is she in town

He who says other, says amiss
Worthy is she to bear the crown

Contestants were gated to the northwestern snowfields of the Lost Lands by two curious beings: Snow Angels.

The Holly & The Ivy, by a snow angel

These beings didn't speak, but directed the male contestants to the south where they could find the Ivy Queen and the female contestants to the north where they could find the Holly King. Each monarch was protected by a group of rather nasty creatures, Ivy Vines and Berry Red Ribbons respectively, who had to be slain before any harm could come to the leader.

For most of the contest the women held the lead. In the end however, the two men were able to slay the Ivy Queen and win the day.

Congratulations to Orange Crush of DC* and Galen of LotF!
