Bio:

• Overview
Mondain is no less than the great evil of the history of this world and many others. Only the most supernatural of forces can claim to have had a longer-lasting, deeper legacy of evil.

• Background
Mondain was the second son of the Wizard Wolfgang, king of the City-State of Akalabeth. As a young boy, Mondain was often subject to fits of rage and depression, finding an evil solace in randomly torturing and killing animals. Many serial killers begin this way, and, in a sense, Mondain can be seen as the most prolific serial killer of all time.

Wolfgang witnessed, or heard of, this behavior and planned to send him away to be educated in Virtue. Once Wolfgang imparted these plans upon Mondain, Mondain instead slew Wolfgang in the latter's sleep and stole from Wolfgang a magical ruby gem that harnessed the power of the sun.

Mondain turned the magic in the gem upon itself, twisting it into an evil artifact of darkness. It enhanced his power and stretched his lifetime well-beyond normal limits. Mondain's power and evil grew, allied with other evils, and plunged the entire world into an Age of Darkness. Kingdoms rose, fell, even thrived, but all were, to one degree or another, in thrall to Mondain.

Until The Stranger, summoned by Lord British and to some known as The Avatar, arrived. The Stranger was able to smash Mondain's Gem and slay Mondain.

The shattering of the gem, however, had unintended consequences.

• The Shattering
The gem splintered into many, perhaps infinite, shards. On some of these shards, new worlds, parallel to the original world (now known to many as the "Prime World") developed. We live in one of these worlds, known as the "shard" of "Great Lakes." Each of these shards differs from each other and from the Prime World. Sometimes in small ways, sometimes quite radically.

The Shattering also had other, smaller-scale effects, such as causing cataclysmic events in the facet of Ilshenar on most, perhaps all, of the shards that still had Ilshenar.

Some shards of the gem do not appear to carry worlds on them, and can be used as magical artifacts of great power, for good or ill or both.

• Mondain's Legacy
Mondain has had a large, long, and complex legacy. Almost all of it is for the worse, with the possible exception of that fact that facing such a great evil has caused us to reach new heights of goodness and talent at fighting in order to combat it.

This, however, simply pales in comparison to Mondain's legacy of evil.

Mondain's taint as given us the orcs, Exodus (the Hellish machine spawn of Mondain and Minax), Minax (the Dark Enchantress, also called the Dark Mistress, whom Mondain took as a lover when she was far too young for such things), The Shadowlords, Lady Melisande, the Shimmering Effusion, The Travesty, Dread Horn, and all manner of foul and evil things we'd be much, much better off without.

Mondain's Legacy will never be escaped from or permanently defeated. It has to be simultaneously fought and lived with.
