Truth is often debated
by philosophers and
scholars. One thought
that I found
interesting, is the
argument that Truth
is relative, and
subject to perception.
Let us think, for a
moment, of a man
with a simple
dysfunction of the
brain, or eye: Colour
blindness. This man
sees green as orange,
or orange as green. In
any case, he can not
distinguish between
them. To this man, the
Truth is that orange
and green are one and
the same. This
argument can be taken
further. All
interactions, and
contact with our
world, is filtered and
interpreted by our
minds. And minds can
be fallible, or deluded
by its self. So, if one
does not acknowledge
the existence of
something, then does
it not become Truth to
that person that the
thing in question does
not exist? For all
intents and purposes,
it does not. Therefore,
the philosophers
argue, Truth is
relative. It is the
perceptions of the
mind that determine
what is, and what is
not. And so, if Truth
is different to each
individual, then how
can it exist?
Nonsense, I say! Truth is defined, perception is not. And to alter perception from Truth intentionally, is self-delusion. To return to the colour blind man, there are physical differences in the universe, that differentiate green from orange. If I refuse to acknowledge a chair, it is still a chair. It still exists, even if it has no impact on further Truths, or my perceptions. Yet, there is danger in this Truth. There are stories of woeful wars being fought for the purpose of belief. So, one side of the conflict may be correct, and therefore, the other must be incorrect. Aye, this is true. Conflicting Truths can not exist in our Universe. (There can be exceptions to a Truth, but those are part of the Truth itself) But at the same time, how can either side state that their perception is the one Truth? What if a war is fought, and one faction is wiped from Britannia, and their perceptions destroyed? A feat of arms does not constitute absolute proof. So, it is all too possible that the destroyed perception was correct, and the Truth of the matter has been destroyed for all time, unless it is rediscovered. Unfortunately, such is a reality of history. "The Victors write the history books," it is said. Therefore, we must all examine, and re-examine our perceptions of Truth, casting aside outdated views which have been proven to be incorrect. Only by building on Truths that have been established, and further refining our perceptions, may we discover the nature of our world, universe, and absolute Truths therein.
