I can't help but take an
interest in the fued
between Tomas Savos and
Imperus Noxum after
being drawn into the
trial. Sadly, there is very
little background on both
of them. Tomas doesn't
seem to have any lengthy
relationships with anybody.
Nobody knows where his
parents are, or if he had
any siblings. He's been
taught by teachers in
nearly every city in
Britannia, but none really
knew him for more than
a month or two (which
explains how he could
have so many teachers).
It does seem that all his
teachers do remember him
though. They describe him
as a very curious young
man who was more
interested in theoretical
knowledge than experience.
Combat instructors all
had one very interesting
comment about him... he
was untouchable despite
his clear lack of skill. If
Tomas was no longer
interested in a training
duel, they found
themselves physically
incapable of swinging at
him (all of these teachers
assured me they only
wanted to hit him to
teach him to always pay
attention, since real
enemies wouldn't care if
he didn't want to fight
anymore). Why he was
tapped for Royal Guard
Commander is difficult to
pinpoint, but it was most
likely because of that
ability: Tomas could not
be harmed unless he
actively put himself in
harms way. Still, he does
not seem like he was
Commander material, at
least not with his
level of experience at
the time. He was more
qualified for a low-level
diplomat, or something like
that. But I suppose we
now know Casca's true
side, and he didn't really
need a qualified
Commander. He just
needed the illusion of a
strong government so he
could help his masters
take over.
After Tomas became
Commander, he was
frequently seen by the
public. Many cast doubts
on his abilities, but none
ever thought of him as a
traitor. He performed his
duties under the
assumption that his
leaders were really looking
out for Britannia, and
seemed fairly virtuous in
the process.
But even with his job, he
had plenty of time where
he was not seen by the
public nor by his
superiors.
It is hard to tell exactly
what Tomas's motives
really are.
Imperus Noxum is equally
as elusive. Nobody seems
to have known him,
except through his quest
to become immortal. He
is clearly very
power-hungry, and has no
problems attacking those
who get in his way. He
also has no problems
using cowardly tactics,
such as making use of
poisons or letting minions
do his work while he
hides in the shadows.
Imperus has shown he
likes challenges at times
too, threatening the
Volunteer Royal Guard,
and taunting Enforcer
Xavier as he was being
chased... both when he
easily could have simply
concentrated on his task
and finished it much
quicker and easier.
Why Imperus decided to
pick Tomas as an enemy
is the most elusive of
matters. Perhaps it was
just a coincidence, and
the Royal Guard was the
most powerful group at
the time, and he wanted
a really big challenge. Or
maybe it was because he
knew they were
distracted, and could
easily fall off their radar
whenever he wanted.
Or maybe Tomas really challenged Imperus first, and Imperus was just reacting to the challenge.
Some third party might also be involved, spreading lies to both sides to start the fight. We may never learn exactly what the reason is behind the fights between Tomas Savos and Imperus Noxum that have been played out by their followers.
