Flower Raid

March 12, 2011
After receiving a strange message, Michael of Moonglow asked for help from the citizens of Britannia.  He met them in the North Britain Counselor’s Hall where they gathered for him.  By way of greeting, he vehemently told them that he was “NOT a leprechaun!”

Apparently, every March Michael is followed around by people asking him for pots of gold.  These “turnip-brains,” as he called them, believed him to be a leprechaun due to his green wardrobe.  “Just recently,” he said, “a little green fellow ran up to me and handed me a note and a rune.  Then it waved its little fist in the air and said: ‘We'll defeat the pretties again this year, brother!’”

A Note, by a leprechaun messenger

Michael realized that the little man was a leprechaun, and that he thought Michael was one as well.  Believing that the note he was given would lead to trouble, Michael said that he would open a gate using the rune so those present could investigate.  With a final shout of “NOT a leprechaun!” Michael opened the gate.

The other end of the gate opened in a ring of marble pillars, right in the midst of…angry pots of gold.  Enchanted fool’s gold, actually, meant to be part of a leprechaun raid.  When the creatures had been destroyed, a drunken leprechaun named Carrick appeared.  He was quickly convinced to explain what was happening, what a “flower raid” was.

One hundred years ago, Carrick had been betrothed to a ‘bonnie pixie lass’ named Lilavieve.  They were set to be wed at the Trammel Shrine of Compassion, but the bride-to-be left him standing at the altar.  His heart broken, Carrick and his brother leprechauns went to war with the pixies.  Every year they gather to steal the pixie’s flowers, and the pixies counterattack by stealing the leprechaun’s ale.

Seeing so many able-bodied warriors, Carrick asked that they help to steal from the pixies.  However, they decided it was a better idea to get both sides of the story, thus they ventured to Twin Oaks tavern to speak to Princess Nissa.

Nissa, who was to be the flowergirl at the wedding, said all of Bet-Lem Reg had waited at the Compassion Shrine all day for the leprechauns.  When they didn’t show, the pixies decided to steal their ale in revenge.  The mercurial Princess soon bored of talking and sent the warriors to the pond to the east to fine Lilavieve.

They found the jilted bride flitting around the small pond tending her roses.  When asked about the wedding, she indicated that the correct Shrine had been in Ilshenar.  “A wedding is always held near the bride's home.”  The fact that Carrick had shown up for the wedding, just to the wrong Shrine, changed her outlook.

Lilavieve wanted to go to Carrick and try to rekindle their relationship, but said she couldn’t without the wedding ring.  Sadly, after leaving the Shrine, she had thrown the ring into the air where it was snatched by two magpies.  She led the warriors to the spot she had thrown the ring, and they eventually won it back from two rather large and disgruntled birds.  Ring in hand, Lilavieve went to find Carrick.

Once the two reunited and admitted to the Shrine mix-up, Lilavieve suggested they renew their engagement.  However, similar to what Lilavieve had done, Carrick had tossed his wedding ring into the Desert of Compassion where a djinn had grabbed it.

The warriors, agreeing to help the leprechaun, stormed the Compassion Desert and harassed every mystical looking bottle they could find.  Eventually, they found a djinn named Imogene who had the ring.  She agreed to give the ring back if the warriors could defeat her efreets…several minutes later the ring was in Carrick’s hand.

Returning to Britain, the couple decided to marry that very moment and exchanged vows.  Afterwards, Lilavieve coyly admitted that she had given birth to a child.  She had left their son with a “nice mage family in Moonglow. Researchers of some sort, very brainy folk.”  That family had named him Michael…
