Title: Deserving Power

Author: Isaac Norwall

In this world, it seems power falls into the hands of the charismatic, the deceitful, or the lucky. It never falls into the hands of those who truly deserve to rule. Lord British was probably the last worthy ruler in all of Britannia. He took action to get where he was, and defended his position himself. He wasn't afraid to rule his kingdom once he had it. He never passed the responsibilities of leadership onto his underlings... at least not until the end. The "Royal Council" that he formed to take his place before fleeing into the Void has been nothing but a mockery. They are too afraid to rule, and simply let anarchy guide the kingdom they are supposed to control. Lady Minax would be no better, despite her obvious desires to take control now. She knows the people would not accept her, but would rather hide and let those who do accept her rule take care of things instead of stand up for herself and show her power. That is probably because she secretly knows she is weak, and only has control over some others because of her beauty and charms.

Lord Blackthorn, before he succumbed to the will of Exodus, could have deserved great power. Sadly, he was foolish, and tossed it all aside for his beliefs in Chaos.

Beyond the major ruling figures of our world, we have numerous lesser figures. Mayors of the various cities, whom do nothing but stand around and look pretty. They have no right holding a position that should be given to someone with real power, and who isn't afraid to use it to get things done. The heads of the Lycaeum, doing nothing but making arbitrary rules with no reason to back them up, and only able to 'enforce' them because so many blindly follow them. The pathetic "High Council" is only a facade of power, only able to enforce their will when enough others actually agree with them.

As if real, living people with positions of authority that don't deserve them isn't enough... thing of all the dead who have authority. People still follow Mondain of all people, dead for hundreds of years. Killed by another who has authority that shouldn't... the "stranger"... a man who hasn't shown his face since he killed Mondain. And then there are the Followers of Armageddon, who give power to a spell! Not even something that was at one time a person! And they devote themselves to this spell that would prevent any with actual power from ruling over those without power.

This world needs to give those with power their respect, and follow them. Not those who look good, or happen to be in the right place at the right time.
