Title: The Ongoing Journeys of Oberon
Author: Oberon, a wanderer
- Volume 2: The Search for Ellena (Part 1)
Oberon's journeys
were still near their
beginning. Lucas
Eventide of Yew had
shown him that a life
could be made in study
and chronicle. He
decided to settle in
this Abbey for some
time. Eventide
informed him that, on
the very eve of his
arrival in the town,
that there was to be a
great celebration.
Horse racing,
gambling, and herding
were a few of the
events to take place.
Oberon, never having been one to turn down a chance to celebrate, prepared himself for the evenings events. Since he was a tailor by trade, it was simple for him to make the costume required to attend. He was only overshadowed in clothing by his new friend, the librarian, Lucas.
He took the opportunity to meet many of the inhabitants of the quaint little village. There was also many travelers from abroad who came to see and take part in the competitions. Oberon gambled, drank, ate, and relaxed. He had found a new home. Little did he realize that he would meet someone that evening who would lead him on a tremendous journey across Britannia.
The darkness of the evening had hidden her from his view from most of the celebration. However, long into the food and drink and competitions he spied her enjoying conversation with friends. Her hair shimmered in the glow of the lanterns, fires and candles. The light played with her skin as if she were the vision of sunsets not seen in Britannia for years. He was compelled to stand forth and be known to this lady.
"I am Oberon..." he
stammered. Unable to
compose any more
thoughts into words
he stood silent.
"I am Ellena. I am pleased to meet you." With those words a conversation was struck in which Oberon realized that her beauty was only matched by her wit and intelligence. He offered his chronicles for her to study.
"I would be honoured to read your tales." He was humbled and knew he could not forget her kindness and beauty, yet the celebration was coming to a close and his chance meeting with her would soon be at an end. He felt he should take the first step and ask for a future meeting. She replied that it would be possible, if he would find her in Yew or Trinsic. Trinsic! What a place. Oberon had not seen beyond Vesper only days ago, and now he was to travel to the fabled marble city of Trinsic to find this lady once again.
The morning following the events, the lady could not be found. So Oberon donned his armour and put away his quill. He set out on the only road which left Yew.
With the Abbey far behind him, Oberon wondered what strange things lay in the woods between the small village and Trinsic. Vesper, his home, was to the east, Trinsic, to the south, beyond the glorius city of Britain. But Oberon had no time to stop there for a burning desire would keep him on path to Trinsic.
Much of the
journey was simple.
The forest roads were
clear and without
trouble during the
daytime. However, at
night, Oberon cowered
in his bed roll for
fear that some
mythical beast with
two heads might scoop
him up and devour
him whole. Yet,
morning always came
and with it Oberon
found new hope and
desire thrusting him
onward.
It was on the third night, just following his crossing the mountains near Britain, that he found trouble. As he set his fire he was besieged by the most ungodly thing he could imagine.
"Is this a dream?" He worried, "Or is my fate to be sealed by this wretched creature that stands before me."
Strangely, the monster did not move. It stood and yet it did not breathe. A human figure stared at him lifelessly, swaying slightly with the cold night breeze. With all his power, Oberon turned on his side and noticed his sword but two feet away. Could he grab it and not disturb this foul thing?
No time to think, he reacted, grabbing his sword, he lept from his bed and swung with every bit of might he could muster. He attack was meant with the sounds of blade cutting and chopping wood. Startled, he jumped back and stared at the thing in the darkness. It still did not stir yet now it groaned. Now he had more courage, he reached to his pack and lit his lantern. The light spilled onto the trees, the ground and the creature.
What stood before him was hideous. A human without a soul. The eyes are the window to such a thing and this monster was without eyes. It groaned again and attempt to grab Oberon, but it did not move from its place. Oberon circled it attempting to find what kept the soulless beast from eating him alive.
He discovered that it was attached to a tree. Its tattered clothing had snagged on a branch and thus, the thing was unable to move. Oberon dispatched it quickly, removing its head with his sword. Still, it did squirm, but after sometime was silent. What a turn of events. Oberon was saved from the undead by a life giving creature, the tree. Forever, would he be thankful for its second gift of life to him.
The light rose on a
pleasant morning.
The creature still laid
silent as Oberon had
watched it all night.
Now that the light
shone he was not
afraid to bury this
creature. When he
had laid it in its grave,
he drew forth a piece
of its garment to mark
the grisly occasion
and noticed the name
on his label. Not to be
uttered again he
buried this fact not in
a grave but in his
mind, so that none
would know what foul
thing this man had
become in death. He
would be remembered
only by friends in
life, not through tales
of attempted murder.
Satisfied he was finished, Oberon rose and headed towards Trinsic, still in hopes of finding Ellena. He was not to be satisfied on his arrival there, yet, many tales can be told of his adventures in the marble city... and they will be told. ...and perhaps he may one day find the lady which he seeks.
Those who read
this tale should be
watchful and
protecting of the lady
and let her know that
Oberon is searching...
