Title: Journal
Author: Ricardo
I, Ricardo, Master Thief, do scribe this journal of my exploits. Well until I get bored that is. Hopefully, it will inspire future generations to greatness. I intend to leave chapters out to be found by those who admire my work.
So I have managed to obtain an impressive pile of treasure, from my prior exploits and my recent adventures. I imagine with my new bauble, my vast horde of the exotic and valuable will only grow. Still, I am not without rivals and enemies. There are certainly those who wish to claim the title of Master Thief by stealing from the Great Ricardo. I applaud their enthusiasm if not their intelligence.
So how do I protect something that I know can be stolen? Looking back at the few challenges in my work, the Vault of Lord British always impressed me. Nystul certainly presented a challenge with his vault lock fit for a king. I knew it took one of the symbols of British’s authority to open the vault: his crown, scepter, or cape, but I wasn’t able to obtain them since the old boy was long gone when I became interested in his treasures. I know now that the vault’s magic was more complex than that. How else could Sherry get close to the object? Why else would simple brute force on the Queen’s order allow entry? I found another way to get the bauble, so I never really looked into the matter. I did have suspicions though.
My suspicions were confirmed recently when I was drinking in a pub in Britain with a mage who was researching a statue also found in the fabled Vault. The small statue resembled Nystul and was apparently part of the Vault’s magical lock. He explained that the statue bowed before Queen Dawn before it was moved from the castle. By some magic, it knew the Crown’s authority!
An almost intelligent magical statue to guard treasure? That seems an object worth of the Master Thief to protect his own horde, so I stole it. It was too easy a theft, so I’m bored. One problem with magic is that it interferes with other magic. I can’t simply move the item with me. I’m too old to run this item all over. I have a spot to hide stuff in the passage to Delucia. I’ll toss the statue there for now.
