• The Legendary Lockpicker

When Inu the Crone was kidnapped and imprisoned by her enemies, a "legendary lockpicker" was needed to get her out. The only one around was a fellow who went by the name of Ricardo, who hitherto had been primarily known by reputation and as the author of a short book entitled "Memoirs of a Footpad."

Ricardo, it seems was a long-time resident of Buccaneer's Den in Felucca, and was a thief by trade. His assistance was necessary to break out Inu, but was difficult to obtain and came at a price.

Before Ricardo's help could be obtained, he entered Terathan Keep to steal from the Terathans. He was captured and imprisoned by them. Searchers for Ricardo, who wished his assistance with freeing Inu the Crone, traced him to the Keep, and their fighting with the Terathans allowed Ricardo to escape. However, being a thief, along the way he decided to do a little stealing from the Ophidians as well. He stole what they called their "artificed scion" or "zenith scion," a sacred crown that, to them, represented the future of their race.

• The War of the Zenith Scion

The Ophidians reacted to Ricardo's theft with a prolonged assault on Britannian cities that has come to be known as the "War of the Zenith Scion," which cost many Britannian lives. The Ophidian assaults were eventually repelled, and Ricardo opened the door to Inu the Crone's cell, thus enabling her to be rescued. His "apology" to the rest of us was half-hearted at best.

• Ricardo's Trial

Though stealing from Ophidians, or any other monster, is not typically considered a crime, it can be considered one when it starts a major war that leaves many people dead, and this was the case with Ricardo. He was arrested and then persecuted in Court.....By Casca.

Regardless of what one may think of Ricardo or his vile, disgusting, sick, parasitic "profession" or loathsome "skills," Ricardo's trial was patently unfair by any definition of the term. His defense attorney, named Beauregard, continually fell asleep during the trial, causing Ricardo to defend himself for much of the time. The "qualifications" of the Judge, one Justice Verina, can be determined by her later participation in Casca's show trials when the latter sat on the throne of Britannia. And of course his prosecutor, Casca, would later murder, lie, and manipulate his way onto the throne of Britannia and is now known to have been in league with the vile Shadowlords. Further, Casca won the case largely through a complex and questionable legal maneuver, wherein he had most of the charges against Ricardo dismissed after evidence had already been presented, a tactic prosecutors are rarely, if ever, allowed to get away with.

The outcome of the trial was predictable: Ricardo was convicted and sentenced to death. It was fortunate for Ricardo, assuming of course that he wanted to live, that the wheels of evil "justice" turned slowly and inefficiently; his execution was delayed for a long, long time.

• Ricardo Under the Casca Regime

As Ricardo rotted, awaiting an execution that was never to come, the world changed. The Royal Council was wiped out, Casca ascended to the throne, and innumerable wars and conflicts resulted. In the meanwhile, Sherry opened lines of communication to Ricardo and the likewise-imprisoned Avery.

At some point immediately prior to the Battle of the Fire Temple, Ricardo and Avery were both sprung from prison, presumably by Sherry.

• Ricardo Under Queen Dawn

Like all prisoners of the Casca regime, Ricardo was pardoned early in Dawn's reign. Dawn made it known that his freedom would last only so long as he does not commit any more crimes. But this wasn't too long.

• A Thief, a Queen, a Demon, and a Crystal

Ricardo came back to the attention of Britannia through a series of most-unfortunate and potentially deadly events. Before his setting off the War of the Zenith Scion, he performed crude but effective research onto secret treasures he felt Lord British had hidden behind the Throne Room of Castle Britannia. This research provided him with the secret spell with which to open the door to the treasure, but he was unable to steal the treasure prior to going to steal from the Terathans, and then from the Ophidiains during his escape, thus setting off the War.

Britannian citizens finished his research and turned the information either to Minax or the Britannian government depending on their bent. It was clear, however, that the presence in the Vault of the Crystal of Duplicity, the magical gem used by Nystul to create Trammel for Lord British, was known to Ricardo. And that the Crystal was, for some reason, Ricardo's real target.

Ricardo committed some unspecified crime, and ended up in the Yew Prison, where he sat there for months. He appeared to have at some point lost his mind (Avery swore the signs of insanity had begun to show during their shared time in prison under Casca) and he was not fully kept an eye on, per the admission of one of the Guards at the Yew Prison.

There is some evidence that Ricardo used the lax guarding to his advantage (and that his displays of insanity may have been an affectation) and may have slipped out at some point. One such point appears to have been the night of the Demon Conclave's attack on Britain in an attempt to steal the Crystal of Duplicity (which they think, probably correctly, is either the same thing as or contains their long-sought Scorched Ruby). The Conclave, it was later known, did not acquire the Crystal during that attack.

Some months later, the Demon Conclave attacked the Yew Prison, with the clear and stated intent to get Ricardo, in addition to mocking Queen Dawn for their affiliated group, the Bane Chosen, having taken her own husband. Ricardo escaped the Conclave, and was in the wind for a long time, possessing the Crystal of Duplicity and evading attempts by the Followers of Armageddon, the Demon Conclave, and Virtuebane to get him.

When Quen Dawn was murdered, there were reports that he attempted to use it to bring her back to life, but he was not successful.

In perhaps the most-ironic of Ricardo's many cycles of degredation and redemption, he provided the means to defeat Virtuebane (strangely enough, said means was hundreds of badly-made Shepherd's Pies), and provided information suggesting that The Pale Lady, a high-ranking servant of evil, was actually a member of the Zog Cabal long-thought dead.

• Recent Activities

Ricardo remains a thief and remains int he wind, having stolen an invitation to King Blackthorn's inauguration and, once there, stole some silverware.
