Title: Fairy Diplomacy

Dealing with fairies and other fae creatures requires a sense of humor. Fairies have a sense of humor. They enjoy mischief. They also enjoy sweets and shiny baubles. They have short attention spans at times, and they will sometimes fly away mid-conversation.

However, fairies also have a very clear view of right and wrong. I have seen fairy sting monsters and evil humans with their magic, protecting their trees and glades. They are very potent casters, even if their small size makes them unlikely warriors.

Fairies have very special ways of greeting each other at special occasions.

The first is a short greeting in a language both parties speak. Fairies sometimes get bored and make up their own personal languages, so it is often important to remind the other party what you are able to speak.

Second is the naming of names. Fairies can be forgetful and often rename themselves when bored, so this ritual keeps both parties from shouting "Hey you, over there!"

The third part is the Greeting of Food. Foods are presented to the other party. The food given should represent the person's role in society (scholar, leader, warrior, or mouse). Meats and fishes are never given, though products from such animals are allowed. Here is a short list of possible foods:

For a Leader – A Honeydew Melon
For a Warrior – An Onion
For a Mage – An Apple
For a Bard - A Bunch of Grapes
For a Farmer or Gatherer – An Ear of Corn
For a Maker of Things – A Pear
For a Mouse - Cheese
For Someone who has not decided or does not know - A Peach

After the greeting of food, the topic of discussion is brought up by the one who isn’t too full. Eventually, to spare as many as possible from boredom, those forced by duty retire to finish the conversation, while the rest take part in dances and songs.
