Title: Casca Becomes King

On January 12, 2009, the Royal Council, by unanimous vote, elected Royal Ambassador Casca as King pro-tempore. Over the following weekend, Casca addressed the people with a few speeches. As a seeming response to the means by which Casca became King, Sherry the Mouse also made a few speeches. The reactions of the people of Britannia were mixed, some showing hatred towards our new King, some seeming to be uncertain as to what to think, but most happily accepting Casca as the new King of Britannia. Approximate copies of the speeches given by Casca and Sherry follow...

Casca's Speech

People of Britannia! My fellow citizens!

Thank you for coming. I stand before you a humble and grateful man. I stand before you as your King.

Today, I hope to share with you my vision for the future.

I hope I can answer many of the questions you probably have.

I am now your king by decision of the Royal Council.

Our Royal Council has been rebuilt stronger out of hardship and pain. It is the wisdom of this Council that in this time of great strife, We, the people of Britannia, would be unified behind one leader.

Of the Council's many members, I was chosen to be that one leader. The Royal Council has placed their hope and trust in me.

I will now work hard to earn these sentiments. However, I will not be working just for the Royal Council.

I will be working for Britannia and the Virtues. And I will be working for all of you as well. Your king is also your servant.

I want you to know the sort of man I am. If I am to lead you, I want your trust.

I have always been a dedicated public servant. As Royal Prosecutor, I stopped the treasonous Ricardo from doing more harm.

I was the first elf to ever have such a role in the Court of Justice. As Ambassador, I helped maintain peace and create alliances.

These allies share our love of good and Virtue. As a member of the Royal Council, I was a strong voice.

I helped to make decisions that kept all of us safe. I faced grave harm as member of this Council, But I persevered to serve for another day. I remain a dedicated public servant.

I believe in the Virtues. Justice guided me in Court.

Humility guided me when working with our allies. Valor when I faced attacks by powerful foes. Compassion when I chose to accept this position. I am not becoming king for personal power or glory.

I am becoming king to keep Britannia safe and prosperous.

To keep all of you safe and prosperous.

I am willing to sacrifice every hour of labor I will ever work, And every drop of blood I have.

For this duty.

For this honor.

I ask as much of you. You have a role to play in our kingdom's future. With my guidance, your swords and your spells will win this war Not just with our current enemies, but all our enemies as well. Will you stand with me against the virtue-less? With my drive and vision, we will rebuild all our cities.

No longer will these gems of Virtue be buried in rubble or debris.

Will you walk beside me as we build our cities tall?

With my thirst of justice, we will strengthen our forces and our laws, So that no villain or army can strike against our Virtues or our lives. Will you live and work with Truth, Love, and Courage?

Will you step into the future with me? We will all have to make sacrifices for this future I see.

This war will be costly in both lives and resources. Many have already died valiantly.

We owe it to these heroes to put aside doubt and win this war.

The struggle will not end with just the Shadowlords' defeat. We have enemies within our own people, brigands and troublemakers. We must know their names and their crimes for Justice.

Our cities will bare the scars of invasion for a short time.

We will also toil long and hard to rebuild. But our people will be safe. Our way of life will be safe.

I tell you now: things will change for the better. We cannot cling to past victories or outdated traditions.

The Royal Council has taken the first step. All of us must be willing to take the next steps. We cannot allow an inefficient bureaucracy to undermine our efforts. Those with the ability will be allowed to do great things.

There will be new faces. I have already started looking for talented individuals Who will strengthen our military, strengthen our courts, and strengthen our cities.

You will all have a role in the future we are building.

I ask that you start working hard for that future and know this: The throne is no longer empty.

Long Live the Virtues! Long Live Britannia!

Sherry's Speech

Good morning, and thank ye for joining me. For those with a confused look on thine faces, my name is Sherry.

Aye, I am a mouse, and Aye, a talking one. I've lived in this castle for years, and am a dear friend of Lord British... As ye may have heard already, Casca was named king recently.

The appointment 'twas made by a veryyy new council, who were appointed in haste. I do not mean to say that Casca is not fit to lead, only that the haste of this decision worries me.

Another recent occurrence has left Avery sitting in a Britannian dungeon. We have not heard his side of the story, yet many seem to have accepted him as a criminal.

Casca says Avery aided the Followers of Armageddon with their murder of the Royal Council.

Casca, however, was locked in a dungeon himself at the time, and the Followers of Armageddon are not above deception.

He may have witnessed another who simply looked like Avery, or heard only what the FoA wanted him to hear.

Avery may very well have been carefully framed by the Followers.

Another prisoner that concerns me is Ricardo. Yes, Ricardo got a trial, but 'twas hardly a fair one.

Ricardo was found guilty of High Treason, a crime crafted specifically to match the actions he admitted to.

He was not found guilty of anything in a way that follows Justice.

It is possible that my concerns are for naught, but assuming we know the answers before we ask all the questions is dangerous.

Even if Casca proves to be a king comparable to Lord British himself, and even if Avery and Ricardo are the scum that they have been made out to be... I would still be worried.

My fear is with what might happen if we continue to act as we have, with haste and minimal inquiry.

Eventually, haste will lead to a grave mistake.
