Tomas doesn't <br /> seem to have any lengthy <br /> relationships with anybody. <br /> Nobody knows where his <br /> parents are, or if he had <br /> any siblings. He's been <br /> taught by teachers in <br /> nearly every city in <br /> Britannia, but none really <br /> knew him for more than <br /> a month or two (which <br /> explains how he could <br /> have so many teachers). <br /> It does seem that all his <br /> teachers do remember him <br /> though. They describe him <br /> as a very curious young <br /> man who was more <br /> interested in theoretical <br /> knowledge than experience. <br /> Combat instructors all <br /> had one very interesting <br /> comment about him... he <br /> was untouchable despite <br /> his clear lack of skill. If <br /> Tomas was no longer <br /> interested in a training <br /> duel, they found <br /> themselves physically <br /> incapable of swinging at <br /> him (all of these teachers <br /> assured me they only <br /> wanted to hit him to <br /> teach him to always pay <br /> attention, since real <br /> enemies wouldn't care if <br /> he didn't want to fight <br /> anymore). Why he was <br /> tapped for Royal Guard <br /> Commander is difficult to <br /> pinpoint, but it was most <br /> likely because of that <br /> ability: Tomas could not <br /> be harmed unless he <br /> actively put himself in <br /> harms way. Still, he does <br /> not seem like he was <br /> Commander material, at <br /> least not with his <br /> level of experience at <br /> the time. He was more <br /> qualified for a low-level <br /> diplomat, or something like <br /> that. But I suppose we <br /> now know Casca's true <br /> side, and he didn't really <br /> need a qualified <br /> Commander. He just <br /> needed the illusion of a <br /> strong government so he <br /> could help his masters <br /> take over.<br /> After Tomas became <br /> Commander, he was <br /> frequently seen by the <br /> public. Many cast doubts <br /> on his abilities, but none <br /> ever thought of him as a <br /> traitor. He performed his <br /> duties under the <br /> assumption that his <br /> leaders were really looking <br /> out for Britannia, and <br /> seemed fairly virtuous in <br /> the process.<br /> But even with his job, he <br /> had plenty of time where <br /> he was not seen by the <br /> public nor by his <br /> superiors.<br /> It is hard to tell exactly <br /> what Tomas's motives <br /> really are.<br /> Imperus Noxum is equally <br /> as elusive. Nobody seems <br /> to have known him, <br /> except through his quest <br /> to become immortal. He <br /> is clearly very <br /> power-hungry, and has no <br /> problems attacking those <br /> who get in his way. He <br /> also has no problems <br /> using cowardly tactics, <br /> such as making use of <br /> poisons or letting minions <br /> do his work while he <br /> hides in the shadows.<br /> Imperus has shown he <br /> likes challenges at times <br /> too, threatening the <br /> Volunteer Royal Guard, <br /> and taunting Enforcer <br /> Xavier as he was being <br /> chased... both when he <br /> easily could have simply <br /> concentrated on his task <br /> and finished it much <br /> quicker and easier.<br /> Why Imperus decided to <br /> pick Tomas as an enemy <br /> is the most elusive of <br /> matters. Perhaps it was <br /> just a coincidence, and <br /> the Royal Guard was the <br /> most powerful group at <br /> the time, and he wanted <br /> a really big challenge.
