 When the Bird first appeared, it was as an employee, if such a concept can be applied to a bird, of the corrupt and evil King Pro Tempere, Casca.  Following Casca's ultimate overthrow and demise, the Strange Bird came into the employ (is service a better word, perhaps?) of the demon librarian Bartholomew.  However, the Strange Bird ultimately betrayed Bartholomew, and is not known to have an employer (master?).
