Jon Meleth was seemingly an ordinary person with three distinctions which, in combination, proved difficult for him. Firstly, he had an elvish wife named Oloriel. Secondly, he had many childhood friends and acquaintances who joined the Brothes of Valor, a human suprematicist group which caused a lot of trouble during the reign of Queen Dawn.

Though evidence suggests that Jon never joined the Brothers, certain arrested Brothers indicated he had in order to spite him for his refusal to join them and for having an elvish wife. Jon was locked up in the Yew Prison.

Which brings us to Jon's third distinction: He was caught up in a prison escape including many legitimate members of the Brothers of Valor, and was hunted both by for-profit bounty hunters and agents of the Britannian government. Fortunately the latter caught up with him first and brought him back to jail alive.

His current whereabouts are not known but attention to his plight was brought to highly-placed individuals and it may be presumed and hoped that they acted on his behalf.
So far as this author is aware, Geryon is the one-known example of the Ettin race that is not-uncivilized. He does, however, share the malign selfishness of his race.

By profession, Geryon is an antiques dealer. His ethics are virtually non-existent. It appears he will literally buy and sell anything, and has been oft-known to out-and-out steal his wares. (One can easily imagine him stealing something and then selling it back to its original owner while barely feigning innocence.) Geryon survives by the skin of his two sets of teeth, by acquiring favors at exactly the right moment from exactly the right people.

He first came to the attention of the Britannian government when he stole a sacred belt belonging to Hipolati, a Queen of a Savage Tribe in Central Ilshenar. He had framed the theft on Hercules (exactly why is unclear, perhaps in revenge for Hercules not agreeing to steal it for him), though Hercules's crimes were by this point already quite-sufficient without adding to them.

Since then, Geryon has shown up time and time again, dealing in some stolen artifact or other, most-recently dealing in a treasure stolen from Lord Blackthorn's castle during the riots that destroyed it (before rebuilding).
Lord British was the founder and first King of Britannia, and the moral philosopher who invented the Virtue system that continues to guide our moral lives to this very day.

However, he proved strangely unreliable, leaving us twice, once for unknown reasons, and the second time to take a powerful artifact to the Ethereal Void to guard it against Minax.

<br>
<br>
'''Detailed Bio:'''<br>
'''• Origins'''<br>
Lord British's history began on a strange world known as "Earth" (sometimes spelled "Urth" and sometimes called "Terra"). A young man named Cantabrigian British somehow found himself in our enchanted land, a very different place from where he grew up. Through processes not recorded, but doubtlessly related to the young man's many talents (which may have been suppressed on his home world), he became a King of an island nation, 1 of 4 such island nations in this (to him) new world.

This world was threatened by an evil mage named Mondain. Lord British used powerful magics and summoned forth a "Stranger," later on known as the Avatar in some circles. This Stranger hailed from British's own home world, Earth (or Urth). The Stranger found his true potential in the world his countryman British had summoned him from. He grew in strength and wisdom and knowledge, and after many trials and difficulties slew Mondain. To do so, the Stranger had to shatter Mondain's Gem of Immortality, and the shattering of the gem created a great number of parallel universes, which we now known as the Shards. We live on one of these parallel world, ours seems to be called "Great Lakes" by the others, and on occasion we get visitors from the other Shards, or people who come from other Shards to settle permanently.

At this point, the histories of the original world and the Shards diverged. Here on "Great Lakes," British unified the people of his island nation with other people, and formed a nation known as Britannia. He also designed the Virtue system, which continues to guide our moral lives to this very day, even in British's absence.

'''• Lord British's Reign'''<br>
It can scarcely be denied that British was a talented, capable, and sincere ruler. Good citizens ranging from beggers, to the nobles at the castle, to the mages of Moonglow, to the skilled craftsmen, to gypsies, all sang his praises. Though the Kingdom was, well, a Kingdom, and not a Democracy, there were aspects of Democracy present, in the way Lord British listened to his subjects, and in the way his rule was tempered somewhat by an advisory Council, which would eventually become the Britannian Council or Ruling Council or Royal Council.

The pre-British aristocracy remained, and throughout the increasingly Democratic era maintained some kind of power, and wealth, and influence.

Lord British's military chief was the famous Dupre, and his court wizard was the famous Nystul. Other famous persons, such as Sherry the Mouse and Katrina the Shepherd and Shamino the Ranger and Geoffrey the Fighter, floated in and out of his court. The seat of government was Castle Britannia, also known as Castle Britain, which was and remains located in the western part of the capital City. This castle continued to be the seat of government under various Royal Councils and under Queen Dawn. King Casca used Castle Blackthorn as his seat, and King Blackthorn at the time of writing uses a considerably re-designed and re-built Castle Blackthorn.

'''• The Creation of Trammel and the Faction Wars'''<br>
Lord British and Nystul, facing an unstoppable invasion from Mondain's former lover Minax and her innumerable evil minions, created a mirror universe called Trammel using powerful magics, renaming the old land Felucca and largely abandoning it. The old world was fought over by 4 armies known as "Factions." One Faction, known as the True Britannians, fought in British's name and had a special relationship with the still-present, but apparently largely retired, Dupre. The other 3 Factions were the Shadowlords (an evil Faction worshiping the demonic wraiths known as the Shadowlords); Minax (fighting in the name of the Dark Mistress herself); and the Council of Mages (the Council of Mages, while accepting the Virtues, disagreed strongly enough with British's decision to create Trammel that they were willing to go against him and constantly sought to re-summon The Avatar/The Stranger).

The four Faction armies fight a never-ending Civil War for Felucca. Lord British's abandoning of the old realm is hands down the most-often question decision he made as ruler of Britannia.

'''• Of Order, Chaos, Virtue, and Blackthorn'''<br>
Lord British's most enduring legacy is probably the creation of the complex Virtue system. In brief, the Virtue system relies upon 8 sacred Virtues, which are derived from different combinations of 3 sacred Principles (Truth, Love, and Courage). One can, the system holds, lead a life that is virtuous and Good, both in terms of one's own self and in terms of how one treats others, by following the Principles and Virtues, and by seeing life as an ongoing tension, and quest for balance, between the Virtues ("should I show Valor and bear this insult, or Justly demand an apology?"). And, of course, the more important tension between the complexity of the Virtue system, and the harsh, unyielding, brutal world we live in, which often demands simple answers to complex questions.

One day, a noble in Lord British's court, a good friend of British, a nobleman named Blackthorn, overheard a conversation between British and the Time Lord, a conversation also overheard by Sherry the Mouse. The contents of this conversation are described elsewhere, but the result was that Blackthorn created an alternative moral system that came to be known as Chaos. Whereas Order and Virtue stressed, well, order and virtue, Chaos stressed individual rights and individual freedoms.

British and Blackthorn continued to play chess together, while their more fanatical followers fought and slaughtered one another in the streets.

'''• Lord British's First Departure, and the Consequences'''<br>
Lord British vanished from the realm, for reasons that were never disclosed. In his place, the advisory Council, known variously as the Ruling Council or Royal Council, ruled.

At this point, events occurred that were widely misunderstood at the time. The following account, written in italic script, represents what we thought happened.

''Despite Blackthorn's philosophical adherence to equality and freedom, in his heart he was an arrogant aristocrat. Blackthorn harbored deep resentment against British for not naming Blackthorn as his successor, leading him to an alliance with the evil entity known as Exodus, and with the Juka race. These 3 parties waged a savage, brutal war against Britannia, which was eventually repelled by the citizens, under the leadership of a young, talented, but woefully under-prepared little girl named Dawn.

Some time later, with Lord British still absent, Blackthorn, without any help from the Juka or Exodus, launched an assault on the City of Yew, during which he was slain by Dawn, who then retreated into obscurity for some years.''

That was the old view. What we now know is that Lord Blackthorn, not too long after British vanished, attempted to challenge Exodus on his own -- a rather stupid move on his part, unworthy of anyone who knows the game of chess. Blackthorn was imprisoned by Exodus, and a doppelganger of Blackthorn was sent to us. It was this doppelganger, with Blackthorn's face and manner, who committed the evil deeds attributed to Blackthorn until heroically slain by Dawn. The real Blackthorn remained imprisoned and tormented by Exodus.

'''• Lord British's Return'''<br>
Lord British returned one day, basically out of nowhere, having to my knowledge never said where he'd been. Lord British's returned coincided with the Revenge of the Dark Enchantress, Minax, who began attacking Britannia at about the same time.

Some weeks after his return, Lord British held a memorial service for Blackthorn (of course not realizing that Blackthorn was not dead at all), wherein British stated, among other things, that he was abandoning his goal of unifying the Shards under the Virtues. And thus, Blackthorn appeared to effectively "won" the Order/Chaos conflict, in death.

Eventually, Lord British left again, to take a powerful artifact (said to be pieces of the Gem of Immortality that powered Mondain) into the Ethereal Void, which would secure it beyond permanently Minax's grasp.

'''• After British's Departure'''<br>
The Royal Council ruled the realm for a number of years, until the ascension of the evil Casca, who became Britannia's second monarch. Casca was succeeded by Dawn, the same woman who had killed the Blackthorn doppelganger years before, until herself being slain by her own husband, under the influence of the demon lord Virtuebane. At this point the Assembly of Lords and Guilds attempted to rule, but proved to not be up to the task, especially with the malicious Lord Kendal in a leading role. The Assembly ruled until the return of the real Lord Blackthorn some time later.

At the end of the day it simply must be conceded that Lord British was a good King for as long as he stayed, but proved in the end to be unreliable. He could have been much more useful as a ruler than attempting to turn himself into a tragic hero.

Zhah is the Queen of the Garogyle Realm of Ter Mur.

She until quite recently appeared to be a wise and good ruler, accepting friendly Britannians with open arms and ruthlessly opposing those Britannians who would seek to harm her people (such as, for example, the villainous and now thankfully-defunct Brothers of Valor).

Zhah has many things to occupy her time. Her realm is under constant siege from the the Void Demons and the Void Plague that accompanies them, the Holy City and ancient Tomb of Kings of her realm is under constant attack from the Undead, the past of Ter Mur recently came back to haunt her (along with an ancient enemy known as the Defiler)....And then there is the matter of the Ver Lor Reg refugees and the disease they brought with them.

When Ver Lor Reg's position proved unsustainable, Queen Zhah let refugees from that Gargoyle City in Ilshenar take refuge in Ter Mur, but they brought their diseases with them. Over generations the Gargoyles of Ver Lor Reg had become immune to a great disease known as the Blight, but the Ter Mur gargoyles were not, and the Blight spread through them like wildfire. The Fishing Village of Ter Mur, northwest of the Royal City, has become a kind of leper colony for victims of the Blight.

A strange healer, claimed to have the means for a cure. Zhah gave the healer, who later proved to be Lord Blackthorn in disguise, and permission (or at least consent) for him to work in her territory, and he eventually successfully cured the gargoyles.

However, when Zhah's daughter was infected with the Blight, Zhah lost her way somewhat. She had the Ver Lor Reg gargoyle herded into a camp and proceeded to bleed them and conduct foul experiments upon them in an effort to find a curse on her own.

It is strange, perhaps, how many rules prove to be disappointments.
<br>'''Bio:'''<br>Tess Midnight was a long-time Royal Spy of Britannia, who now appears to be freelance and often works in the Tokuno Islands, for the government there. She appears to have come into Britannian service slightly before Magnus Gray and James and trained the both of them.

Tess came to the attention of the current crop of the Royal Spies as nearly-anonymous messages, and then not many, sent from her to Magnus Gray. She had gone missing sometime during the Casca regime; it now appears as though she caught onto something bad going on and just....left.

She only met them following Magnus's imprisonment by Casca. Tess stepped up and assumed the role of Spymaster/resistance leader temporarily, sending Magnus's agents on mission that involved investigating a fraudulent Bell of Courage and ended up resulting in Magnus's being regained by the Spies.

Her whereabouts, and her employer, are oft-subject to change, but she was most-recently seen sounding the metaphoric alarm bells about the growing thread of the Rondorin Resistance, a comparatively new dissident group in Tokuno.
Grizelda the Hag is a seemingly harmless old witch who lives in a hut between Skara Brae and Britain, not too far from the road that goes north of the Yew/Skara/Brit crossroads.

She played a role in the Inu the Crone affair (which we now know was the first indication of the early attempts of the Shadowlords to enter our realm). Specifically, the help of her and Inu was sought by the Royal Guard in order to assist a mage named Finarfin. Among other items, the toes of ancient cranes were needed; and Grizelda's method was favored by the Royal Guard for harming the cranes less. This was the cause of some animosity between Inu and Grizelda.

Grizelda on occasion needs help from adventurers and will offer help in return. Sometimes the Royal Spies have visited her, as her research and experiments sometimes prove of use.

Perhaps the most-notable, and definitely the most-recent, of these instances was when Dupre and the Royal Guard had her make a potion that would incapicate most, but not all, of the guards and defenders of Margreta of Trinsic, thereby making the efforts to get Margreta somewhat less bloody than they would have been otherwise.
'''Bio:'''<br>
Hercules is a would-be adventurer and would-be hero. He is, however, a rather stupid, drunken, lazy, inefficient soul, and takes all character traits to such an extreme that they border malice....And, sometimes, crosses over that border. Indeed, from what little we know of his exploits so far, in many of his adventures, intelligence was notably absent. As was thoroughness and any kind of decency. About the only "heroic" character trait he has displayed is an enormous about of raw physical strength, in some cases bordering on that possessed by a titan or some kind of divine presence. He is able to slay fearsome beasts with his bare hands or with an unexceptional, crude club. (Any mage skilled in the art of wrestling for defense purposes can testify as to how little actual damage ones hands can usually do against the savage creatures of our realm. Even the Ninja of Tokuno typically find it prudent to learn how to fight with weapons, as rarely does one face a mortal foe who is not himself quite well-armed.)

Hercules's strength suggests he may not only be of human origin.

However, his many negative character traits, as described above, more than compensate for his strength, and have led to his heroic deeds being closer to criminal in nature than heroic.

For example, when he "persuaded" Artemis, the Zookeeper of the Moonglow Zoo, to give a prized rare stag to Delucia, he had in fact kidnapped Artemis who had taken the form of the stag. (Notes of his found long afterwards indicated that he just didn't understand why the stag was talking to him in ahuman voice.) As another example, he slew a rare, large ant lion on the pretext that it had been terrorizing Compassion Village (the gypsy encampment found when you follow the mountains south, then west from the Shrine of Compassion in Ilshenar). However, as it turns out the Ant Lion was the protector of the Village, helping to ensure its survival despite being caught between Ratman Territory and the Gargoyle Pass. Also, he cleaned the stables of Trinsic by altering the course of the rivers. This alteration, however, caused such an amount of waste to be deposited at the "wrong" point of the river that the sea creatures mutated and attacked Trinsic; fortunately the Royal Guard was on the scene before any of the townsfolk died or any significant damage was done.

In fairness, Hercules did legitimately slay the Stygian Hydra, a fearsome beast. However, Hercules left behind the beast's immortal head, thus ensuring that sooner or later it would regrow and resume its legacy of evil. (It took the Britannian Royal Guard to properly finish the job.)

He was to be Knighted by Queen Dawn for his exploits, but then his being a fraud was exposed by the Royal Spies (Her Majesty's Secret Service) and the Volunteer Royal Guard, as well as several amassed citizens who came expecting a formal banquet and were rather annoyed, justly, at the turn of events.

For his frauds, and for the kidnapping of Artemis, and for his behavior when he was exposed, Hercules was locked up in jail by Royal Guard Commander Christine Keel. He escaped with a couple of weeks, however, by bribing some of the Yew Jail guards with alcohol, and continued his vile exploits in Tokuno and Ilshenar.

It took a few months of trying but he was eventually captured by the Royal Guard. It was also discovered that strange magics working on him had magnified his natural lack of intelligence and aggression, and thus arguably he was only half responsible for his misdeeds. His whereabouts, and ultimate fate, are not known.

* '''The Legendary Lockpicker'''
When Inu the Crone was kidnapped and imprisoned by her enemies, a "legendary lockpicker" was needed to get her out. The only one around was a fellow who went by the name of Ricardo, who hitherto had been primarily known by reputation and as the author of a short book entitled "Memoirs of a Footpad."

Ricardo, it seems was a long-time resident of Buccaneer's Den in Felucca, and was a thief by trade. His assistance was necessary to break out Inu, but was difficult to obtain and came at a price.

Before Ricardo's help could be obtained, he entered Terathan Keep to steal from the Terathans. He was captured and imprisoned by them. Searchers for Ricardo, who wished his assistance with freeing Inu the Crone, traced him to the Keep, and their fighting with the Terathans allowed Ricardo to escape. However, being a thief, along the way he decided to do a little stealing from the Ophidians as well. He stole what they called their "artificed scion" or "zenith scion," a sacred crown that, to them, represented the future of their race.

* '''The War of the Zenith Scion'''
The Ophidians reacted to Ricardo's theft with a prolonged assault on Britannian cities that has come to be known as the "War of the Zenith Scion," which cost many Britannian lives. The Ophidian assaults were eventually repelled, and Ricardo opened the door to Inu the Crone's cell, thus enabling her to be rescued. His "apology" to the rest of us was half-hearted at best.

* '''Ricardo's Trial'''
Though stealing from Ophidians, or any other monster, is not typically considered a crime, it can be considered one when it starts a major war that leaves many people dead, and this was the case with Ricardo. He was arrested and then persecuted in Court.....By Casca.

Regardless of what one may think of Ricardo or his vile, disgusting, sick, parasitic "profession" or loathsome "skills," Ricardo's trial was patently unfair by any definition of the term. His defense attorney, named Beauregard, continually fell asleep during the trial, causing Ricardo to defend himself for much of the time. The "qualifications" of the Judge, one Justice Verina, can be determined by her later participation in Casca's show trials when the latter sat on the throne of Britannia. And of course his prosecutor, Casca, would later murder, lie, and manipulate his way onto the throne of Britannia and is now known to have been in league with the vile Shadowlords. Further, Casca won the case largely through a complex and questionable legal maneuver, wherein he had most of the charges against Ricardo dismissed '''after''' evidence had already been presented, a tactic prosecutors are rarely, if ever, allowed to get away with.

The outcome of the trial was predictable: Ricardo was convicted and sentenced to death. It was fortunate for Ricardo, assuming of course that he wanted to live, that the wheels of evil "justice" turned slowly and inefficiently; his execution was delayed for a long, long time.

* '''Ricardo Under the Casca Regime'''
As Ricardo rotted, awaiting an execution that was never to come, the world changed. The Royal Council was wiped out, Casca ascended to the throne, and innumerable wars and conflicts resulted. In the meanwhile, Sherry opened lines of communication to Ricardo and the likewise-imprisoned Avery.

At some point immediately prior to the Battle of the Fire Temple, Ricardo and Avery were both sprung from prison, presumably by Sherry.

* '''Ricardo Under Queen Dawn'''
Like all prisoners of the Casca regime, Ricardo was pardoned early in Dawn's reign. Dawn made it known that his freedom would last only so long as he does not commit any more crimes. But this wasn't too long.

* '''A Thief, a Queen, a Demon, and a Crystal'''
Ricardo came back to the attention of Britannia through a series of most-unfortunate and potentially deadly events. Before his setting off the War of the Zenith Scion, he performed crude but effective research onto secret treasures he felt Lord British had hidden behind the Throne Room of Castle Britannia. This research provided him with the secret spell with which to open the door to the treasure, but he was unable to steal the treasure prior to going to steal from the Terathans, and then from the Ophidiains during his escape, thus setting off the War.

Britannian citizens finished his research and turned the information either to Minax or the Britannian government depending on their bent. It was clear, however, that the presence in the Vault of the Crystal of Duplicity, the magical gem used by Nystul to create Trammel for Lord British, was known to Ricardo. And that the Crystal was, for some reason, Ricardo's real target.

Ricardo committed some unspecified crime, and ended up in the Yew Prison, where he sat there for months. He appeared to have at some point lost his mind (Avery swore the signs of insanity had begun to show during their shared time in prison under Casca) and he was not fully kept an eye on, per the admission of one of the Guards at the Yew Prison.

There is some evidence that Ricardo used the lax guarding to his advantage (and that his displays of insanity may have been an affectation) and may have slipped out at some point. One such point appears to have been the night of the Demon Conclave's attack on Britain in an attempt to steal the Crystal of Duplicity (which they think, probably correctly, is either the same thing as or contains their long-sought Scorched Ruby). The Conclave, it was later known, did not acquire the Crystal during that attack.

Some months later, the Demon Conclave attacked the Yew Prison, with the clear and stated intent to get Ricardo, in addition to mocking Queen Dawn for their affiliated group, the Bane Chosen, having taken her own husband. Ricardo escaped the Conclave, and was in the wind for a long time, possessing the Crystal of Duplicity and evading attempts by the Followers of Armageddon, the Demon Conclave, and Virtuebane to get him.

When Quen Dawn was murdered, there were reports that he attempted to use it to bring her back to life, but he was not successful.

In perhaps the most-ironic of Ricardo's many cycles of degredation and redemption, he provided the means to defeat Virtuebane (strangely enough, said means was hundreds of badly-made Shepherd's Pies), and provided information suggesting that The Pale Lady, a high-ranking servant of evil, was actually a member of the Zog Cabal long-thought dead.

* '''Recent Activities'''
Ricardo remains a thief and remains int he wind, having stolen an invitation to King Blackthorn's inauguration and, once there, stole some silverware.
Avery was an official of the Royal Guard. Whether he still has that status is not yet known.

He appears to have had several assignments in his career. He was the Royal Guard field commander when the Blackrock Detector blew a hole in the fabric of reality. He was assigned to track down the remaining members of the Followers of Armageddon. Finally, he was fingered as a traitor by Casca, and was for awhile imprisoned, alongside Ricardo the Thief.

From what we can tell of his character, he is a competent officer who follows orders well. However, he does not appear to be overly smart, and had the unenviable task of denying the Shadowlords' involvement in the Blackrock Detector matter, despite clear evidence of their involvement. This made him appear perhaps even dumber than he actually was. Combined with the strangely-colored and strangely-ineffectual armor he was seen wearing during this period, he aroused suspicion in many. This suspicion made it frightfully easy to believe Casca's accusations of treachery. We now, however, know that these accusations were false.

Avery spent many years in hiding, recovering from his ordeal, and occasionally surfaces in a tavern. He was present, however, for King Blackthorn's inauguration.
<br> '''Brief Bio:'''<br> Dawn was Queen of Britannia, having come to that role through an process which, though opaque, can said to be welcomed by most Britannians. She slew Lord Blackthorn (or, rather, the robotic doppelganger who appeared to be Blackthorn at the time) many years ago, and slew Lord Casca more recently. She died in the line of duty, at the (indirect)&nbsp;hand of the demon lord Virtuebane, and the (direct)&nbsp;hand of her husband, Ors, who was possessed at the time. She is buried in her beloved Yew, west of the Empath Abbey.<br>

'''Longer Bio'''

*''Early History''

Dawn was a native of the City of Yew. Her parents died when she was young, and she was raised by her Grandfather, a superannuated Knight of the Realm who schooled her in the arts of combat and in the ways of Virtue.

*''First Appearance''

Dawn, then a very young lady, fought in the wars against the Juka, who had been manipulated by Blackthorn (or, rather, the robotic doppelganger we all thought was Blackthorn for many years) into attacking Britannia. Though the fighting began in Yew, it was in a battle in Britain that she caught the attention of Dupre, who effectively recruited her into the "inner circle" that advised the leaders of the realm in the absence of Lord British, and became a "Royal Knight" (a new name for the Order of the Silver Serpent).

Though Dawn was at first suspicious of the Meer, who followed the Juka through time to help us fight them, Blackthorn (robotic doppelganger), and Exodus, she eventually became friends with a Meer girl named Dasha. Dasha and Dawn shared the experience of losing their homes.

Some time after the Juka war, Blackthorn gathered up some followers and, without any obvious help from Exodus or the juka, attacked the City of Yew. It was during that attack that Dawn had the distinct honor of landing the killing blow on Blackthorn (robotic doppelganger). For her efforts she was rewarded with Dawn's Music Box, replicas of which are owned by many Britannians. Some state that she was named a "Regent" of the realm at some point, but no document could be located to verify that.

*''Absence from Public Life''

Regardless of whether or not she was appointed Regent, Dawn retreated entirely from public life following her slaying of Blackthorn (robotic doppelganger). She eventually married and settled in her home city of Yew, in a house at the west end of town, south of the Court of Truth and on the east end of the bay. There she lived quietly with her husband, a simple but strong farmer named Ors, just an ordinary girl in Yew living an ordinary life, for many years. Britannia was ruled by the Ruling Council, and regulated by the High Council.

*''Dawn, Warrior of Destiny''

Along with Sherry the Mouse, Dawn was one of the last links to the Lord British regime. When the evil elf Casca became King of the realm through apparent trickery and exploiting of a desperate situation he had helped to create in the first place, he eventually came to see Dawn as a threat despite her long absence, and attempted to kill her by burning her house down. He failed, and Dawn ended up joining, and then leading the gathering resistance against Casca.

Dawn had changed somewhat in the intervening years. She was no longer the brave but naive and borderline-foolish little girl we once knew, with few experiences besides training, a few big battles, and a role she was thrust into rather than earned. Instead, she was a young lady, smarter and shaped by more ordinary life experiences.

Dawn led the resistance through its critical last stages, working with Royal Spymaster Magnus Gray and with Christine Keel (who would alter be Dawn's Commandant of the Royal Guard), and played a key role in the direct battle against the Shadowlords that took place at the Fire Temple, the final fight against the Crimson Dragons which took place in Felucca, and finally being the one to kill Casca by destroying the magic, Shadowlord-powered gemstone that gave him life. Casca thus became the second major villain to be slain, directly, by Dawn, the third if one counts the Shadowlords themselves and counts them all as one.

*''Queen Dawn''

Following the conclusion of long Shadowlord conflicts, Dawn was crowned Queen of Britannia. In the political confusion that often follows such catastrophic events, it is difficult to saw who crowned her, exactly, but not many people seemed to care. Some stability in the realm was needed, and Dawn was both qualified and willing.

Her first actions upon being crown Queen mostly revolved around the appearance of Ter Mur, the Underworld, and the Stygian Abyss. Specifically, she or her staff sent soldiers and cannons to contain the evils of the Underworld, and she established a Britannian outpost in that dark pit of Hell, in order to monitor the evil down there. She also made diplomatic overtures to Queen Zhah of Ter Mur.

*''Virtuebane''

With the coming of the demon lord Virtuebane and his vile half-human minions the Bane Chosen, the young warrior Queen was put to the test.

She took a series of good measures, and also made a series of what can only be called mis-steps.

She put the Crystal of Duplicity, which she'd intended to use to clear the demonig magics preventing rebuildilng in the demon-wrecked city of Magincia, on display in the Throne Room of Castle British, thus half-inviting an attack by Virtuebane and the Demon Conclave that was probably inevitable anyway. (This would be an example of a mis-step.) However, during that attack she was literally the only thing that prevented the city of Britain from falling; most of the defenders were ready to give up, but she did not let them. The city of Britain, due mostly and perhaps only to her efforts, did not fall in an attack that, while it may have not been quite meant to make it fall, easily could have. Further, Queen Dawn took prudent steps to contian a full-fledged invasion of Britannia's cities by Virtuebane's Armies, and to secure Britannian dominance over the seas. She also managed to bring in the Meer and the Ophidians to assist in containing Virtuebane's invasions, though it fell to Britannian citizens to directly fight the invasions within the cities themselves.

Despite these prudent measures, Virtuebane had done his work.&nbsp; Dawn's eaerlier mis-step with the Crystal led her to be accused of the Sin of Pride. The Sin of Pride is a funny sort of sin. Once you're accused of it, almost everything you do can be interpreted in that light, and the accusations are hard to shake off. Queen Dawn found her political support eroding due to an accusation of Pride that, itself, was likely in-part based upon the Pride of her chief accusers.

*''Death of the Lioness ''

Though Virtuebane's attacks meant with the stiff resistance of the Britannian citizenry, the attacks persisted and Virtuebane himself proved to be beyond any direct attack. Frustration, and indeed desperation, set in. Queen Zhah's magicians devised a way to strike at the demon lord, using magics that clustered around the Virtue of Humility and a sword that had been in Dawn's family for some generations, and that had the odd distinction of being made from a plow (a reversal of the famous symbol of peace, turning swords into plows).

The ritual to properly Imbue Dawn's sword took place at the Humility Shrine in Ilshenar, and it was there that Virtuebane unleashed his most effective and cruellest attack. Ors, under the influence somehow of Virtuebane, went to the Shrine and stabbed his own wife, using a demonically poisoned dagger. (Poisoned in part through the efforts of the pirate Maggie the Red, ironically the mother of Christine Keel, Queen Dawn's Commanadant of the Royal Guard. In a small, but important, hope, Dawn's sword, now presumably capable of harming Virtuebane physically, was not recovered by Virtuebane.

Dawn, a fine young lady and a powerful warrior with much growing left to do, will be missed.

*''Queen Dawn's Legacy ''
Queen Dawn's legacy lives on in various ways. It was in part in tribute to her that the Magincian Crusades were held, and the final attack on Magincia Island that led to Virtuebane's defeat and banishment was launched. The strange group known as the Fellowship (part cult, part knightly order, and part charity), founded a small town named for her. She is buried in her beloved Yew, just west of the Abbey, and a statue of her known as "Dawn the Valiant" forever will mark and celebrate her courage and strength. She had a new kind of ship designed, which has secured Britannia's dominance over the high seas. The ship of this type that belongs to the High Council is known officially as the "Queen Dawn's Legacy" and unofficially as the "Queen Dawn's Revenge."

She was succeeded by the incompetent and corrupt Assembly of Lords and Guilds, which attempted to extent its influence over the capital city of Britain to be over the entirety of the realm, and caused additional fractures in a realm already sufficiently broken.

'''Longer Bio'''

*''Early History''

Dawn was a native of the City of Yew. Her parents died when she was young, and she was raised by her Grandfather, a retired Knight of the Realm who schooled her in the arts of combat and in the ways of Virtue.

Dawn led the resistance through its critical last stages, working with Royal Spymaster Magnus Gray and with Christine Keel (who would alter be Dawn's Commandant of the Royal Guard), and played a key role in the direct battle against the Shadowlords that took place at the Fire Temple, the final fight against the Crimson Dragons which took place in Felucca, and finally being the one to kill Casca by destroying the magic, Shadowlord-powered gemstone that gave him life.
'''Bio:'''<br>
Holt Wilder was a long-time Royal Spy of Britannia, a mentor to Magnus Grey and Magnus's brother.

He was good at his job and came very highly rated. However, he was possessed of a certain ruthless amorality, which led him to make some strange decisions. For example, when the possibility of Magnus Gray's being compromised existed, to "investigate" the matter Holt unleashed the evil of Nujel'M slavers (the Mirza family) onto Britannia, in order to figure out how compromised Magnus was. The result, however, was potentially worse than the evil he sought to remedy. Magnus's life was put in danger, as were the lives of many other slavers' victims.

The manner of Holt's death was, predictably, similar to the manner of his life: Mysterious. He died during a massive fight with the minions of the Mirza family, in the bowels of Nujel'M, and it remains unclear if he was killed by the Royal Spies by accident, the result of a murder by one of the Royal Spies, killed by the enemy, or for some reason attacked the Royal Spies and was defeated.

Either way, he is dead, and whether this is fortunate or unfortunate is debatable.

It is, perhaps, best to remember him well, for he did much good for the Kingdom during his career. It is also, perhaps, best to consider him an excellent case to retire from the spy profession before one becomes what one beholds.
'''Bio:'''<br>
Virtuebane is a particularly foul and vile demon lord. His purpose is pretty much spelled out in his name. The research of Agatha the Archaeologist and the scholars of the Lycaeum suggests that he is very, very old.

His direct influence in Sosaria considerably predated his appearance, going back to the Demon Invasions of Magincia. His direct influence was unwitting facilitated by Queen Dawn's attempt to manipulate the Crysal of Duplicity to break Virtuebane's hold over Magincia Island.

Virtuebane recruited a number of human followers, who became known as the Bane Chosen, and with them and his more conventional demonic minions (and some help from the Demon Conclave of Hythloth) he attacked Britannian cities, did terrible damage, and occupied the Island of Magincia for a considerable period.

He also killed the Warrior Queen of Britannia, Dawn, using her own husband as the murder weapon.

The research of Agatha and the scholars of the Lycaeum uncovered that the way to defeat him was a combination of conventional attacks, and humiliating him (approximating the Virtue of Humility). The coordinated forces of the Britannian Royal Guard, the Britannian Armed Forces (High Council militia), and the Magincian Crusade (a series of attempts to reclaim Magincia led by Galen Knighthawke), eventually weakened Virtuebane and forced him out of Sosaria.

Unfortunately, we were unable to kill him, and I do suppose his return is all-but-inevitable.
Second he appeared as a member of the Bane Chosen, the human minions of the Demon Lord Virtuebane.

He was, much to the regret of the Kingdom as a whole, a competent operative for both.

As the former, he survived well enough, outliving the group as a whole. As the latter, however, his luck and skill finally ran out, and he was slain in combat.
'''Bio:'''<br>
Dupre was, and likely remains in some capacity, a great Knight and Paladin of Britannia. He was a close associate of Lord British and Nystul, and appears to have in some capacity known the "Stranger," also known as the "Avatar" to some, who slew Mondain and set a shining path of example for the Virtues. He is associated with the City of Trinsic, and some suggest he was knighted by Lord British himself.

His known exploits include the following (not in any particular order):

• Fighting alongside then-future Queen Dawn in various battles against the Juka (long before Dawn ascended to the throne);

• Also during the conflict against the Juka, Exodus, and Blackthorn, seeking and procuring an alliance between Britannia and the Meer that, more or less, stands to this very day;

• Leading the armies to take back Trinsic from Minax and her vile undead army lead by Juo'Nar;

• Leading, in some indirect capacity it seems, the True Britannians Faction;

• Taking a leading role in the rebuilding of the Bell of Courage during the first of several matters involving it;

• (After a long absence from public life) leading the armies of Britannia to what may well be a final dispute of Exodus.

Like many noted heroes, however, Dupre's comings and goings are odd and unpredictable. He seems to be around at some points, and not around at others. He does not appear to have had a seat on the Ruling Council, and this had a significant advantage for him, as it enabled him to survive the brutal assault on the Ruling Council that brought Casca to the throne.

During (RL time Summer 2012)m Dupre was been more-active than was typical for a long time, brought out of a kind of retirement, or at least a retrenchment, in part by Sherry the Mouse, who perceived the need for greater unity in the realm. Dupre temporarily took direct command of the Britannian Royal Guard, with the full consent of Royal Guard Commandant Gwendolyn Kincade (later returning command to Gwendolyn). Under his leadership the Guard was led to what may well be a final defeat of Exodus. He also was the one to recognize Lord Blackthorn while the latter was still in disguise as an anonymous healer in Ter Mur. Dupre was also the one to propagate the news that Blackthorn had returned, and was not the half-machine monstrosity that had fought for Exodus so many years ago. Finally, Dupre crowned Blackthorn King, then faded back into the sunset.

Like most mythological figures, it may well be that Dupre's mytho-heroic status is as much a matter of timing as anything else.

'''Bio:'''&lt;br&gt;
Exodus's true nature was never quite figured out for certain, but the most intelligent speculation had him as some kind of demonic machine. What was known for certain is that Exodus was an evil entity, and was the unholy spawn of Minax and Mondain. He lived, if that word is the correct one to use, in the southwest corner of Central Ilshenar, in an area known as the Exodus Dungeon or the Power Core.

Exodus was often credited with assisting Blackthorn's conversion from pompous, misguided, resentful nobleman into full-fledged evil. This, however, was rather wrong.

Together, Blackthorn (or, rather, a being incorrectly believed to be Blackthorn) and Exodus disrupted the timeline of Ilshenar, making that facet's history bizarrely, dizzyingly uncertain. (Is there a crueler fate than to not know what parts of one's history are true and which aren't?) Among other violations of the timeline, they brought back the Juka race, and unwittingly the Meer race as well, from antiquity. Exodus also enslaved the gargoyles of Ilshenar, an offshoot of the Ter Mur gagoyles.

The efforts of (the presumed) Blackthorn, Exodus, and the Juka (under the foul leadership of the Warlord Kabur) led to many deaths in Britannia, and the Meer's efforts to counteract the various unleashed evils led to a plague, making matters worse. They were greatly weakened, however, by the freeing of the Ter Mur gargoyles through the efforts of the people of Britannia, and the bombardment, though not destruction, of Exodus in his own lair. Even after the war to free the Ilshenar Gargoyles was over, Exodus's dungeon remained vulnerable, and occasional raids there made Exodus's road to recovery difficult.

For a machine, however, time is not measured in years or months. Their time horizon lasts as long as their physical parts and their strangely-coded instructions fromn their makers last. In Exodus's case, it was too long.

What we now know is that, prior to the all-out-war between Britannia and the various legions of Exodus, Lord Blackthorn, foolishly charged into Exodus's lair and attempted to take on Exodus on his own. Blackthorn failed, and was imprisoned, and replaced by an Exodus-made doppelganger, which was slain by then-Royal Knight, and eventual Queen, Dawn when it launched an all out assault on Yew. After Exodus's defeat, he held onto Blackthorn.

Dawn, following the defeat of the Blackthorn doppelganger, stated the Exudos's power had faded, and such indeed appaered to be the case at the time. As noted, however, Exodus's time horizon was infinite. It bided its time, and went dormant, probably knowing it'd have another chance. The denizens of Ilshenar came to call Exodus "The Sleeper." Exodus slep through many great events.

Its chance came some years later, when the meddlings of a foolish little student girl named Callie awakened the dormant Exodus. Upon the awakening of Exodus, a long-dormant contingency plan it had was activated. The timeline was messed with yet again, with effects that remain uncertain even after these events are over. Exodus retook Ver Lor Reg, the once-freed city of the Ilshenar Gargoyles, forcing the gargoyles back into Ter Mur, and made inroads into Britannia in part through the meddlings of the Diligence Subset: Evil gargoyles who saw the machine Exodus as the ultimate in Diligence, one of the three principles so dear to gargoyle spiritual life.

Exodus once again, however, found his path blocked by the efforts of Britannia. Under the leadership of Dupre, Britannia raided Ver Lor Reg, where Exodus had regained physical form, and slew him in a long and drawn out battle.
Sweet Maid Sally first became known to us as an operative of the vicious pirate Maggie Keel ("Maggie the Red"). Her primary tasks were a combination of subterfuge and seduction, and she appears to have been at least mid-level in Maggie the Red's Crew. She was charged with multiple major contacts with the Bane Chosen, one of which led directly to the murder of Queen Dawn. Sally was not, however, with Maggie when the Britannian Government finally caught up with, and slew, the latter.

Sally was seen again in Felucca, attempting to encourage people to disrupt the Empath Abbey's Festival of the Grape by stealing the grapes, and in various other places doing various other nefarious things. She was affiliated with the criminal group Apex.

As an Apex operative, she undertook two critical, and related, actions: She opened up a casino on Fire Island, and became Mayor of Vesper. The latter was related to the former because the previous corrupt Mayor of Vesper was forced from office as a result of gambling away all his money at Sally's casino.

Despite her known criminal afiliations Sally has been able to successfully maintain a facade of legitimacy in Vesper, and was careful to not cause unfriendly relations with the capital city of Britain or the country of Britannia. Indeed, she executed her Apex colleague, Margreta of Trinsic.

Sally for the moment remains in Vesper, in her position, and beyond reach.
Gwendolyn Kincade took over as Commandant of the Britannian Royal Guard following the retirement, to a life of pirate hunting, of Christine Keel.

Very little is known of her. Her primary weapon appears to be the bow, which suggests she came up through the ranks of rangers or scouts. She seems a little young for her role, but also seems competent. She has indicated that she did not quite expect to be in the position she is, but as of yet the specific story of her promotion to that role is not known. She has also indicated that she had a good deal of experience with the City of Trinsic.

When Dupre returned briefly, in the months leading up to the awakening and claiming of the Britannian crown by Lord Blackthorn, Gwendolyn ceded her role as Royal Guard Commandant to Dupre, and joined the Trinsic resistance against the Apex-led government of that city. Not long after that government was forced from power in a raid led by Dupre, she resumed her role, and Dupre, like all legends do, faded back into the shadows.
'''Bio:'''<br>
Margreta of Trinsic is one of the strangest figures encountered by Britannian authorities of late.

When she first appeared she seemed to be a sincere if frighteningly and near-maliciously ignorant ruler of the City of Trinsic, blaming the city's problems on Britannia proper and attempting to use drugged food to keep her people pacified in the midst of their famine, unrest, and other civil problems. (It should also be noted that these problems were far from unique to Trinsic, but only Trinsic attempted such drastic and sure-to-fail-horribly measures.) As part of blaming Trinsic's troubles on Britannia proper, she declared that city's independence from it, thereby adding to the problems she blamed for Trinsic's troubles.

Margreta soon-revealed her true colors, however. Far from being sincere but ignorant, she was indeed outright malicious, a key figure (and quite-likely high-ranking member of) an evil criminal/terrorist group known as Apex. Sincere but ignorant was just her disguise. Her crimes are already nearly-beyond count, and her high-ranking role in Apex and its various criminal conspiracies has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt most times. Her crimes include, but are by no means limited to, the murder of her own husband Edward ("Ned"), treason against Britannia, the drugging of her own people, numerous acts of terrorism, piracy, blackmail, murder, and the like. In her capable hands, the once-noble city of Trinsic has become a cesspit of lies, deceptions, and paranoia, with people taking extreme measures to avoid eating the food (thus becoming drugged), or even sleeping.

She held sway over Trinsic for a long time, despite the return of Dupre, the occasional raids on that city by the raiders of other cities, and an active resistance movement.

But she did not hold sway forever. Eventually, Dupre and Gwendolyn Kincaid led a mission to Trinsic. The mission was aimed at retaking Trinsic for Britannia, and in that respect the mission failed, as Trinsic retained its independence. However, it succeeded in breaking the hold of Margreta. Margreta, attempting to flee, was captured by Sweet Maid Sally, who at the time was Mayor of Vesper. Sally, herself like Margreta an Apex operative, killed Margreta under the legal auspices of the City of Vesper. Margreta's spirit, pursuant to necromantric power, was then later put to final rest by representatives of the Britannian government.

Sadly, Margreta's evil was not recognized by the people of Trinsic, and the grave sites of her and her hapless husband are visited by newly wedded couples in Trinsic, seeking blessing. Her City remains independent, though not unfriendly to Britannia as it once was. In a sense, she remains victorious in death.

Evil is unfortunately not always recognized for what it is.

Sam Oxley is a former bank employee and Royal Aide. The kind of person every royal house needs, who doesn't mind a flexible job description and isn't locked into having a daily routine. He served under the Royal Council, Casca, Queen Dawn, and the Assembly of Lords and Guilds. Being a true patriot and loyalist, he assisted the Royal Spies in working against Casca, and for awhile became a wanted man, hunted by Casca's vile Enforcers. He survived the Casca regime and served under Queen Dawn until her death, then worked under --not for but under-- the Assembly of Lords and Guilds. Oxley was one of a number of competent, quiet bureaucrats who kept the facade of national unity alive while the Kingdom fell apart. He and the others like him kept things from getting much worse.

Oxley, unfortunately, was killed by the criminal group Apex during a gigantic riot in the City of Britain. Apex felt it would benefit from increased chaos.

• Fighting alongside then-future Queen Dawn in various battles against the Juka (long before Dawn ascended to the throne);

• Also during the conflict against the Juka, Exodus, and Blackthorn, seeking and procuring an alliance between Britannia and the Meer that, more or less, stands to this very day;

• Leading the armies to take back Trinsic from Minax and her vile undead army lead by Juo'Nar;

• Leading, in some indirect capacity it seems, the True Britannians Faction;

• Taking a leading role in the rebuilding of the Bell of Courage during the first of several matters involving it;

As of the time of writing (RL time Summer 2012) Dupre has been more-active than has been typical for a long time, brought out of a kind of retirement, or at least a retrenchment, in part by Sherry the Mouse, who perceived the need for greater unity in the realm. Dupre took direct command of the Britannian Royal Guard, with what appears to be the full consent of Royal Guard Commandant Gwendolyn Kincade.

Like most mythological figures, it may well be that Dupre's mytho-heroic status is as much a matter of timing as anything else.

The career of Lord Blackthorn has had many twists and turns, some comical, some tragic, some triumphant, and some a combination of all of the above. He first was known as a kind of counterweight to Lord British, presenting a vision of goodness that differed from British's but was no less good for the difference. Then, for years, he appeared to be a great, tragic villain of our world. Of late, however, he has emerged as a hero, and was eventually crowned King.

His name is very often misspelled to "Blackthorne," but "Blackthorn" is the proper spelling.

* '''Background'''
Blackthorn was a nobleman, noble-born, noble-bred, with a nobleman's refined tastes, a good friend and chess partner/opponent of Lord British's

* '''Politics'''
Originally, Blackthorn was a friend and ally of Lord British. He founded a philosophy called "Chaos" that was designed to counteract Lord British's philosophy of the Virtues. Sherry the Mouse claimed in a written work that Blackthorn formed Chaos after overhearing a conversation between British and the Time Lord, to the effect that if everyone in all shards followed Virtue, the shards would re-integrate. While this eventuality would help heal the wounds caused by Mondain to time itself, which would surely be a "good" thing in objective terms, it would effectively end the existences of everyone on the shards. Blackthorn thus reasoned that a competing philosophy would prevent this eventuality, and thus invented Chaos.

Broadly speaking, Chaos held that there was value in all lives, even the lives of evil creatures and evil people, and that it was difficult to define "Virtues" in terms of objective morality in the manner contemplated by British's Virtue systems. More details can be found in Blackthorn's various written works, which continue to be printed, sell well, and be read.

Some, unfortunately, considered Chaos to be synonymous with evil, which even the most-ardent but literate followers of Order had to concede it was not.

* '''Blackthorn and British'''
Blackthorn and British maintained their friendship despite their competing philosophies, and while their more fanatical followers slaughtered one another in the streets.

* '''Blackthorn's Damnation'''
At this point, a strange reversal of our view of events has recently taken place.

For a long time, what we thought had happened was thus:

''Former View''
As stated above, Blackthorn was a nobleman, and aristocrat, with an aristocrat's tastes, education, and expectations.

When he did not immediately ascend to the throne upon British's first absence, Blackthorn became bitter and resentful. Despite the tolerance and egalitarian sentiments of Chaos, at heart Blackthorn was an aristocrat, and thought, simply by right of noble birth, that he should have the throne until British returned. He thus succumbed with remarkable ease to the temptations of the villain Exodus, and became true evil. He also became a half-human, half-machine monstrosity, and converted many other humans, followers of Chaos no doubt, to follow him in his evil. We know these as the "Betrayers," and they continue to pose a threat to us, showing up as foot soldiers in a variety of evil armies, allying with anyone they can to strike out against Britannia.

During this period, he took up residence in a new castle in Central Ilshenar.

Blackthorn and his forces participated in the attacks on Britannia launched by the Juka and Exodus.

After the fading of Exodus's power, Blackthorn grew impatient, gathered up some apparently random evil forces, and launched an all-out attack on the City of Yew. During the fight, he was slain by Dawn.

''Current View''
We now know that Blackthorn, in a noble but horrendously foolish attempt to take on Exodus by himself, entered Exodus's dungeon and confronted the demonic machine himself. Blackthorn's ploy failed and instead of killing Exodus was imprisoned by him. Exodus then created a rather convincing doppelganger of Exodus and used that doppelganger to commit the evils that were, rather understandably, attributed to Blackthorn.

These events have been confirmed through several sources, including but not limited to an analysis of the corpse inside Blackthorn's Grave in Britain, Felucca, which revealed that it was not Blackthorn who was killed and buried.

* '''Blackthorn's Memorial'''
Upon his return to the realm, Lord British heard of the seeming-fate of his own friend, and mourned him despite the evils attributed to Blackthorn. It was, British stated, Blackthorn's death that had caused him to return to Britannia.

"My friend Lord Blackthorn is dead," stated the King, "and I am sorrowful at his passing. He became corrupted by great Evils, and now is no more. Though we were often at odds, the truth of his downfall wears upon my soul." Words of praise for Blackthorn's slayer, Dawn, sadly did not come.

British also stated that, as a monument to Blackthorn's ideas, he was abandoning his goal of uniting the Shards, under the Virtues. Thus, in death, Blackthorn effectively won the Chaos/Order wars.

* '''Blackthorn's Awakening and Return'''
For reasons that are unclear, the imprisoned Blackthorn awakened. He somehow managed to find his way back to the world, though he first surfaced in Ter Mur, not Britannia. In Ter Mur he managed to cure the Gargish Blight, a disease that had been brought back to Ter Mur by refugees among the Gargoyles of Ver Lor Reg, the Gargoyle city in Ilshenar. Dupre became aware of his friend's return, and was informed of the events involving the doppelganger, and word of Blackthorn's return spread. Still more or less in disguise, Blackthorn took measures to ease the troubles in Britannia.

In recognition of his efforts, moderately successful thus far but better than anyone else had done or likely could have done, Blackthorn was crowned King.

During Blackthorn's imprisonment, his once-jester, Heckles, used hidden moneys to build a shining castle for his master on the site of Blackthorn's previous castle in Britain, Trammel. The Felucca version of the castle remains the same as it was, complete with the doppelganger's grave.

Barry the Moongate is the Luna Moongate. It first became sentient, or made us aware of its sentience, following the appearance of Inu the Crone, when Moongates appeared to become of importance for reasons that were never quite clear to any of us. (We now know that the Moongates were being effected by the Shadowlords attempts to enter our realm through the Ethereal Void. Conventional Moongates proved inadequate to the task, and the Shadowlords were forced to find another point of entry.)

For years after the events that made Barry sentient or made the rest of us aware of his sentience, even as the magic dissipated somewhat, Barry could still be communicated with in a rudimentary way. He was frequently seen chiding people for not referring to their pets by the pets' names.

His voice, however, has not been heard --literally or figuratively-- for quite some time. He was not heard from during the events involving Exodus's making a tear in the Ethereal Void at the Honor Moongate, for example, and this seems like the time when he would've made himself heard had he still been able to.
'''Bio:'''<br>
Kabur was once a Warlord of great stature among the Juka race. However, he sealed his own undoing when he allied the Juka with the foul, machine demon Exodus. The expected result of his allying his people with the foul entity was the destruction of their ancient enemy, the Meer. It didn't turn out that way, however, and the Juka suffered greatly at the hands of the Meer, of Exodus himself, and of Britannia (whom they foolishly attacked at Exodus's behest).

The Juka at some point turned against Kabur, and he became an exile of sorts among his own people. He eventually was hired by the criminal organization Apex, and at their behest interfered in the first attempt to fix an Exodus-caused tear in the Ethereal Void, at the Honor Moongate. His actions resulted in the deaths of two great mages and in his own destruction. After his successful assassination of the mages, who were in the process of fixing the Moongate, he was tracked down by agents of the Britannian government, and defeated in a savage fight.

Alive but barely so, he was turned over to his own people; peace between the Juka and Meer was a possibility if Kabur was turned over.

The Juka have been told that, if Kabur escapes their custody, they should expect no mercy from Britannia.
Gilfron is a scholar and mage of the Lycaeum. He is an expert on Moongates, dimensional travel, facets, and the like. He is of a stature that rivals that of Dryus Doost.

Gilforn's crowning achievement for a long time had been his discovery of the Facet of Ilshenar, and how to travel to it. Easily eclipsing that achievement, however, was devising a way for Lord Blackthorn to fix the tear in the Ethereal Void that had been made, by Exodus, at the Honor Moongate in Ilshenar. Gilforn lacked the power to affect the cure but created the means by which Blackthorn could.

Regrettably, however, Gilforn lacked a certain common sense wisdom that God gave the common snail. He attempted to acquire knowledge from wisps without paying them, thus incurring their wrath, and rendering it problematic when their knowledge proved necessary to finalize the moongate cure.

Gilforn is currently with the wisps, his staying with them a payment for their assistance. The wisps have been warned to not harm Gilforn or risk the considerable wrath of Britannia.

She was a leader of the Meer, and among other great deeds she faced down the Juka Warlord Kabur in an ancient ritual known as the "Black Duel." Her mentor was Ardranath, until the latter appears to have lost some of her respect for engaging in some ill-advised and nearly catastrophic actions, both in the Meer's original timeline and during the first time when Britannia engaged the forces of Exodus.

She was a friend and ally of Dawn, both before and after the latter's ascension to the throne of Britannia.

She remains a leader of some importance among her people, and attended the coronation of King Blackthorn on their behalf.
The tale of Ardranath is a strange one. Like all of the Meer race, he is from far in the past, brought back to our time through the foul meddlings of Exodus, the demonic machine that was the spawn of Minax and Mondain.

Ardranath has the dubious honor of committing one of the last acts of his race in their own native time period: Casting a spell that nearly destroyed his own race and the Juka race, with whom the Meer fought an eternal and ritualized war. Exodus, however, instead brought both races to the present time. The Juka then became his allies, for awhile anyway, in various attacks on Britannia.

In an ill-advised and misguided attempt to fend off some of those attacks, Ardranath cast the same spell with which he'd nearly ended his race and the Juka race, with predictably disastrous results, for the City of Yew in particular. Fortunately, Ardranath and his fellow Meer were able to fix most of the damage.

After that, Ardranath was not heard from for a long time, until the time of Exodus's awakening, when he assisted Britannia once again.

<br>'''Bio:'''<br>Maggie Keel, also known as Maggie the Red, is noteworthy for several things. Firstly, she is a bloodthirsty, ruthless pirate known for such in a profession where that's not uncommon, and is in fact the norm. Secondly, she is a woman in a male-dominated field. Thirdly, she is the mother of Christine Keel, once-Commandant of the Royal Guard and now, ironically, a legally-authorized pirate hunter.

Maggie Keel was a vicious pirate, famous for being the commander of the ship named known as the "Get Even." She wrought fear and terror in the way pirates are often wont to do, until one day she was finally captured and was about to be put to death. And then, she started "showing." The pirate wench was pregnant, who the lucky man was is not recorded.

Maggie the Red "plead the belly," as they say, and was eventually released and pardoned, following the birth. She returned to her life of piracy, rumor and intelligence has it, within a week.

At some point, for reasons which are not recorded, her daughter split off from her and ended up, of all things, a close associate of Queen Dawn's during the battle with the Shadowlords and their forces on Fire Island (Isle of the Avatar).

After her daughter's ascension to the position of Commander of the Royal Guard, Maggie the Red approached the Britannian government to, in essence, take her side in a pirate civil war between herself and a darker, more sinister figure named Smith, the Pirate King, and his foul bride, the Liar Queen. Maggie would likely not have survived the War of the Blood Coast, as the conflict has become known, at all had she not managed to secure a steady supply line from Bucaneer's Den, the residents of which wisely realized they had little to gain from the dominance of the Pirate King. While the Britannian government would obviously not take sides in a civil war among any criminal groups, it was fairly easy to see that Smith and his bride and his crew were by far the greater threat at the moment.

While the intent of Commander Keel and Security Minister Magnus Grey appears to have been to arrest or slay Maggie upon getting rid of the Pirate King, after the deed was done, Maggie was able to escape. She remained at large for some time, and later played a role in equipping the Bane Chosen, and indeed participated in the preparation for Virtuebane's cruellest and most effective attack to date:&nbsp;The murder of Queen Dawn by her own husband, Ors.

This was one crime too many.&nbsp; Maggie became the object of an intense manhunt by representatives of the Brtiannian government.&nbsp; She was, imprudently, offered a chance to surrender but, fortunately, chose to fight.&nbsp; She was defeated after a pithced battle.&nbsp; Her head decorated a pike outside the Counselor's Hall in West Britain for some time, along with the heads of 3 others who were most-directly involved in Queen Dawn's murder.&nbsp; Her book of lost treasures was turned over to her daughter.
Christine Keel is an enigmatic figure with a strange history. She was the child of the famous, brutal pirate Maggie Keel (also known as "Maggie the Red"), and an unknown father. Despite her upbringing and her parentage, and her helping of her brutal mother with her savage profession early in life, Christine was attracted to the good side perhaps by a certain moral instinct.

She entered the service of Dawn, playing a key role in the battle against the Shadowlords underneath the Demon Temple. When Dawn became Queen, Christine became the Royal Guard Commandant, and led the Royal Guard through a long series of adventures against various foes. On some occasions these foes even included her own mother, and indeed Christine played a key role in killing her own mother in vengeance for her mother's role in killing Queen Dawn.

Not too long after that incident, Christine left the Royal Guard and acquired letters of marque, becoming a legally-authorized for the government of Britannia. In that capacity she helped Magnus Gray and his Royal Spies many-a-time. Eerily she has taken her mother's former pirate ship and adopted much of her mother's manner of dress. Due to corruption within the Britannian government she even occasionally has the legal status of a fugitive or outlaw, thus bringing her strange career full circle.

'''Background Story:'''
MEMORANDUM FOR: ROYAL BRITANNIAN GUARD

SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT AS COMMANDER</center>

To the Members of the Royal Britannia Guard:

Greetings. I am honored to have this opportunity to command such a public-spirited group. The Royal Guard is bonded by a proud tradition of distinguished service.

I began my military career fighting in Moonglow against Minax’s attacks. Sir Geoffrey then asked me to join the Royal Britannian Guard. After several years of serving in the Guard, I left to captain my own ship. My ship assisted a royal navy ship, the HMS Mariah, and I was asked to become captain of that ship. The Mariah provided naval support in the Magincia Battle. I later resigned from the navy and again had my own ship, The Jaana. The Jaana provided assistance at the Fire Island battle that ended the War of Shadows. It was then commissioned as the HMS Jaana.

I look forward to meeting all of you at the banquet at which I shall take up my new post. Long live the Queen.

Sincerely,

<u>''Christine Keel''</u> [signed]

CHRISTINE KEEL

Captain, Royal Britannian Navy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
''An entry from the diary of Maggie the Red (AKA Margaret Keel), Captain of The Get Even:''

I hear that my little girl is going to be Commander of the Guard. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. When she ran away to fight in Moonglow, I didn’t send my crew after her because I thought she’d come back, someday. Maybe that was just wishful thinking, but she’s always been my lucky charm, even before she was born.

I had finally been captured. I was facing death by hanging within the month. Then dear Christine made her future presence known. I was able to “plead the belly”, as they say. My execution was delayed and, after Christine’s birth, I was pardoned. I was released immediately and even given some gold, with the instruction that I should go forth and be a good and doting mother. I was back on the high seas within a week. But I’ve always tried to be a good mother to dear stubborn little Christine, the baby who saved my life.

It’s true that our personalities differ in some ways. She’s never had a sense of humor. I remember when she was young, on calm days the crew would take turns throwing her as far out into the water as possible, to teach her to swim. Christine nagged me to make them stop, but I wasn’t worried. She was born in a caul, she’ll not die by drowning. Anyway, all that ended the day she clambered up the bobstay quicker than thought and kicked the first mate so hard he limped for a week. She’s a fine swimmer now though, better than most sailors. Well, that’s not saying much as most sailors don’t know how to swim!

She’s always been very methodical. You should have seen her when she was ten, systematically hacking off the fingers, one by one, of an enemy pirate who was hanging onto the gunwale of our ship. After each finger, she politely asked him if he’d like to surrender, then went on to the next. Actually, he joined our crew after he finally gave up, and he and Christine got along well, no grudges. Good old Six-Finger Bob, pity about that shark.

I intend to be at the banquet, to see my baby again. I’ll disguise myself so she’s not put to the trouble of arresting me. Though, I wonder if she would?

Gianna glanced up from the morning paper and said to her husband, “it seems there’s going to be a banquet in Britain, I wonder if we should go. No, such a long journey and I can barely endure the wine at the castle.”

Sam nodded and continued to scoop up forkfuls of his eggs Magincia.

Gianna turned the page. “That old friend of yours, Keel, seems to have gotten herself appointed Commander of the Guard.”

Sam perked up. “Well deserved!”

“You followed her all around the globe for years, didn’t you?” Gianna said in a bemused voice. “Was she beautiful?”

“Better than that, she was competent,” Sam said.

“I remember that was your first compliment to me as well,” Gianna said, laughing.

“Well, it’s true. The way you run your business is the way she ran her ship. She knew how to do every job on that ship and was willing to pitch in when needed, but she could give orders without making anyone feel like a worm.”

“Good instincts too,” Sam continued his reminiscences, “I remember when I met her, she’d just bought her first ship, The New Hope. In those early days, we took on whatever cargo we could get. She had a knack for avoiding pirates. Sometimes we’d sail days out of our way, through rough waters, to arrive at our port and find we were the only ones who’d gotten through a virtual pirate blockade of the place. So we got more work and were doing pretty well.”

Sam paused to uncover another platter, this one piled high with bacon.

“Then one day we saw a distress signal. We were far out at sea and most of us didn’t want to respond, knew it had to be pirates, but Keel gave the order, so we sailed into our first battle. We had some cannons—“

“Cannons?” Gianna said. “That’s unusual for a cargo ship.”

“Yup, told you she was good at thinking ahead.” Sam said, grinning. “So we had cannons and weapons, but we were a young crew and most of us were terrified.”

“We fired our cannons at the pirate ship, while Keel got herself aboard the distressed ship and ran through those pirates like butter. Several of us were right behind her, hacking away. We were winning, but the pirates set fire to The New Hope. Keel looked back and yelled the order to abandon ship. No concern for her life savings going up in flames, just ‘get everyone off that bloody boat and get a weapon in their hands!’”

Gianna had put down the newspaper and was wide-eyed. “Did everyone get off the ship in time?”

“Every single soul. And we all fought our hardest. I even saw Keel put her extra dagger in the hands of the ten-year-old deck swab and tell him, ‘stab anyone who smells like horse dung.’”

“So your crew was able to kill all the pirates?”

“No, there were a few left alive, lying on the deck groaning. Keel threw them overboard and let them try to swim for their ship, which was already retreating. A few made it.”

“Clever,” Gianna said, “so those survivors could warn other pirates how fierce your crew was. Did the ship you saved take you to port?”

“Better than that. It turned out to be a navy ship, The HMS Mariah.”

“The first ship you served on. You never said much about it.”

“Yup. They’d suffered heavy losses, including most of their officers.” Sam said, “So they asked Keel to be their captain and the rest of us to join up too.”

“What happened next?” Gianna asked, happy to hear her usually taciturn husband so talkative.

“Let’s go for a walk in the garden,” said Sam, standing up and offering his wife his arm. “I’ll tell you about the Battle of Magincia, building The Jaana for the resistance, and sailing to Fire Island to defeat the Shadowlords.”

He was hired by Lord Casca to commit arson (and homocide) by setting Lady Dawn's home in western Yew ablaze. The Royal Spies tracked him to the ruins of west of the Chaos Shrine in Ilshenar where he reluctantly confessed to the crime.

He was also hired by the Brothers of Valor to help them devise a fire-based attack to use against the Gargoyles of Ter Mur. The Brothers did not pay him, and he was persuaded to give information to the Royal Spies without violence.

He was seen having a role in many evil conspiracies since he was persuaded to temporarily help the Royal Spies, and survived many encounters. However, his luck finally ran out. In an attack on the Fellowship City of Dawn, he was finally slain by agents of the Britannian government after an epic confrontation.

He was targeted for harm by those who exploited his work, and was kidnapped and held in the Pass of Karnaugh in Ilshenar. After his rescue by the Royal Spies, he went into hiding for awhile.

When he returned to scholarship and to public life, it was his intent to study pretty much anything except Blackrock, which led to a series of bizarre events. During one of these events it was revealed that Michael was not, in fact, human at all (despite his appearance) but was a fae/leprechaun hybrid.
She appears to be a wise and good ruler, accepting friendly Britannians with open arms and ruthlessly opposing those Britannians who would seek to harm her people (such as, for example, the villainous and now thankfully-defunct Brothers of Valor).

As of the time of writing, she maintains a grip over Trinsic despite the return of Dupre, the occasional raids on that city by the raiders of other cities, and an active resistance movement.

When last we heard from her she had --she swore temporarily-- given up the Commandant role to Dupre, and she was known to be taking a more-active role in the resistance to the Apex-led government in Trinsic.
He is associated with the City of Trinsic, and some suggest he was knighted by Lord British himself.

His known exploits include the following (not in any particular order):

• Fighting alongside then-future Queen Dawn in various battles against the Juka (long before Dawn ascended to the throne);

• Also during the conflict against the Juka, Exodus, and Blackthorn, seeking and procuring an alliance between Britannia and the Meer that, more or less, stands to this very day;

• Leading the armies to take back Trinsic from Minax and her vile undead army lead by Juo'Nar;

• Leading, in some indirect capacity it seems, the True Britannians Faction;

• Taking a leading role in the rebuilding of the Bell of Courage during the first of several matters involving it;

Under his leadership the Guard was led to what may well be a final defeat of Exodus. Whether he will remain in the public eye, and on the public stage, however, remains very much to be seen.

Like most mythological figures, it may well be that Dupre's mytho-heroic status is as much a matter of timing as anything else.
<br>'''Bio:'''<br>

Biralla was a monk of the Empath Abbey (really before there was such a thing) who lived many years ago.&nbsp; She was known for having a great strength of spirit.&nbsp; She decided at some point, for reasons which are uncleaer, to explore the northern regions of Britannia, which back then were largely unmapped and unexplored.&nbsp; She made her way, on foot and wearing a Monk's Robe, from Yew to what is now Minoc, having many adventures, encountering many strange characters, and solving a strange murder mystery along the way.

She is, among most Britannians, a celebrated figure.&nbsp; Periodically her journey is reenacted, and tales of her are very popular adventure stories.&nbsp; Her observations are still noted by scholars, even though what she described is now commonplace and widely known.&nbsp; Her ghost is sometimes seen when her walk is reenacted.

However, during her journey she became involved romantically with a gypsy, which led to some violence that resulted in her becoming embroiled in a murder mystery of her own, and in the gypsies having unkind memories of her.&nbsp; The gypsies have long memories, but fortunately this also applies to the truth as well as to their legends. When the truth of Brialla and the gypsies was finally revealed by direct descendents of the gypsies she encountered, it was far more kind to Brialla than the legends had been.<br>

The "Seven Tears" is her order, which became the cornerstone of the orders that coalesced in Yew and became collectively known simply as the Monks of Empath Abbey.

We live in a cynical age, and it is often too-easy to assume that the facts are less pleasant than the legends.&nbsp; Brialla's inspiring story now has another meaning:&nbsp;it is an example of the opposite of our cynical assumptions.&nbsp; Brialla's story in fact was even better to her than it was in legend.&nbsp; May this lady and her journey be celebrated for all time to come.

<br>
